Talking Clay Bar what am I doing WRONG?

I tried showtime with a clay Bar and all it did was glide. I was to feel and hear it taking things off the paint but it just did nothing. I tried less showtime and just got clay on th car! It then slipped out of my hand and hit the ground! I know, get rid of it, and I did.I need this to work because I have serious orange peel on parts of the car to get off.Only shows up in full sun. Please help.

Sory, clay isnt gonna get rid of orange peel, only some 2000 grit sandpaper.

On a fairly clean car, your not gonna get alot of stuff off with the clay bar. Just dont try to hard at it our you could get careless and scrath the finish.

Each time I have used the clay, it really doesn't FEEL like you are doing anything but believe me, you are. Do the old hand in the plastic bag trick before and after and you'll convince yourself you are really doing something. Or, do half of your hood with the clay and then squirt water on it. You'll SEE what you have done.

Default clay bar

I just slide it on the hood, right? One row at a time? Also, what I see on my right front fender may not be orange peel. It looks like very small grains of sand, here and there. I mean it's the same color as the car but seems to be raised. Can only see it in the sun light and it is only in certain area's.What is it and how do I remove it? Thanks

Have you thought about ABC'ing your car. Just a thought, it may help with what you seem to be describing as paint contamination.

Default Clar Bar etc.

Have any of you tried the detailing products from Griot's Garage in Tacoma, Wa. I've been using them for my last 5 cars and been very pleased. Great service and great products, and a neat catalogue every month or so.

Keep on Z'n

Clay isn't going to get rid of orange peel.

A 2000 grit sand paper should work. You can find "ungrit" sand paper from Meguiar's in 1000 through 3000 grit. Ungrit sandpaper is specifically designed for automotive finishes.

Soak the paper in clean water for at least a half-hour or so and then wrap the paper around a sanding block.

Apply water while sanding to keep the area lubed. I use a back and forth motion and rinse the paper to get rid of the build up.

When you are done with this you will need to use a polisher and a cleaner.

Lastly a foam polishing pad and polish will give it the gloss back.

If you don't know how to do this, a $30,000 sports car is not the place to start. Try it out on an old car or have someone who has experience do it for you if the orange peel bothers you that much.

All the Z's I have seen so far have orange peel. The redline one I saw at a dealership was the worst of them all. The color of the car makes it stand out more too.

Question

Dumb question of the day -

What is Orange Peel? I think it may mean where you have paint areas which resemble tiny dimples..almost like a controlled spatter?

Right or Wrong?

Orange peel is probably on every production car that you see on the road.

When looking at a car from an angle you see thta the paint does not reflect the light like a mirror would. There is a rippled effect.

What the sand paper does, is smooth out these areas so that the refelction is crisper.

Here is a web site that explains what it looks like very briefly.
