Default Baked On Brake Dust

Hey guys,

Do you know any tricks for baked on brake dust?

I wash my car once a week but I slacked off and two weeks later, I can't get the black dust completely off my 18" front wheels.

I heard you can claybar it off. Are there any other options?

I would not claybar it, as you will not be able to use the claybar again.

I would recommend Simple Green, however be careful as this stuff will ruin your wheels if not taken off properly. Do not use this or any other cleaner when the wheels are hot are warm.

Have you tried old fashioned elbow grease with soap/hot water?

Another product might be Tar remover.

Another solution is to change the fronts to Hawk Pads, they make a tremendous difference in brake dust. Like night and day.

maybe goo gone? dilute it with some water, and make sure the wheels are cool, not piping hot.

Default 3M All Purpose Cleaner

I use 3M All purpose cleaner on my 18 inch rims. You can get it at any auto paint supply store. There is an Sherman Williams auto paint supply store not too far from where I work so its not a lot of trouble for me to stop by and get a can. A can will last you a long time too. Also good for tar and tree sap.

personally I'd clay it. If you have an old claybar around that's even better. I save my old clay bars for wheels and windows

Hawk HPS brake pads are great. I replaced my OEM pads this past spring and now brake dust is a minimum and clean up is very easy.

The pads are available at www.tirerack.com for around $62

Is there brake squeal from Hawks? Right now my stocks have no squeal and I'd had to mess up that golden silence.

My understanding is that they squeal, but not a lot.

I use Simple Green. It works great... dunno about removing it well, but I rinse the wheels down completely and its the first thing I do when washing my car. Then I wash the wheels again at the end w/ the last bit of soapy water of my carwash w/ an old washing sponge. I hope that is sufficient.
