Default A Little Advice on Brake Dust

About 2 weeks ago I spent the better part of an hour diligently cleaning my 17s because they were full of brake dust. But after only a couple days the brake dust creaped up again.

I didnt want to sit there and waste another hour on my weekend cleaning dirt from a piece of metal. Rummaging through my car cleaning supplies i found some "Eagle one brake dust cleaner spray" -- i gave it a shot. You just spray the rims, wait about a minute then spray the rims with water from a hose. the rims looked brand new and it only took 5 minutes to clean all 5 rims .

i highy recommend this stuff to everyone on the board.

you have 5 rims? hehe jk guess your spare was dirty.

anyway. might try it out, I bought baby wipes today to clean the handles, rims, and that grease mark on the window. nice little canister to have in the car, and it can clean up any other little messes that I run into.

I tried this stuff from properautocare.com called Wheel Wax. Great cleaner and the next time I washed the car, the brake dust washed off with water. It may take some time to put the wax on, but the benefits are worth it.

I used Meguiar's Hot Wheels spray...worked pretty darn well, though I'm sure the wheel wax would be great.

Be careful with abrasive cleaners like Simple Green... They are bad for the clear coat on your wheels. Most painted wheels are clear coated just like the rest of the car. Use something like Wheel Wax instead. Regular carnuba wax won't last very long because of the heat generated by the wheels.

I used Blackfire on my wheels... I'll see how well it works when I wash my car again this weekend.

I agree with you 350z power! That Eagle wheel cleaner is da bomb! I couldn't believe how quick I cleaned my wheels. I went and bought that product after I spent a half hour cleaning my wheels and cutting up my knuckles. F**k that! The stuff is orange and works like a champ so I highly recommend it as well!

I have used Simple Green to clean synthetic chain lube off bicycle chains for years, I guarantee you it is non-abrasive.

Its caustic, dont let it touch your paint/wheels. Trust me, I know someone who used it for years on their porsche wheels beofre he realized it completely etched into his clear-coat.

Default Eagle One Brake Dust Cleaner

All "spray on - spray off" cleaners are acid based. If you have a chip of any kind on your wheels, even microscopic, the acid will get into the chip, under the clearcoat, and eventually start lifting the clearcoat causing it to peel and chip off.

DON'T USE THIS STUFF IF YOU LIKE YOUR WHEELS!!!!

IT IS ACID!!!!

Short chemistry lesson:
Not all wheel cleaners/brighteners are acid. Most that may be intended for non-clearcoated rims are acidic and as mentioned may damage clearcoated or painted rims, but brighten aluminum by removing oxides or white rust. However a great many products on the market are actually caustic (simple explaination: highly alkaline) and as such can also damage clear coat or painted rims, but will most definitely pit or etch polished aluminum which has not been clearcoated. I don't know all the products on the market, so I don't even know where to begin with a recommendation, but regardless of what kind of rim you have you may be safest to use a product which has a neutral pH (near 7) Many more of these products are entering the marketplace and may not emulsify oils or remove brake dust quite as quickly, but are far less likely to do damage over time. For the record, you may never notice the damage because it is so slowly progressive, but if you could put your rim next to a new one years down the road, you would quite likely go "Holy S**t"

It is safe for Clearcoated wheels .. in fact thats one of their biggest selling points. It clearly screams that this product is safe and that it specifically formulated for "Clear Coated Rims"

i will take your advice to a degree however and will not be using it to often ..
