magazine 1/4 times vs my350z.com 1/4 times
Car & Driver, Road & Track, and Motor Trend ALL do the following to generate their 1/4 times (they even state this in the publications):
1) They use onboard accelerometers (fancy Gtechs). They do not race on tracks.
2) Their numbers are an average of 10 runs.
3) They correct their times and mph to standard conditions (sea level, 0% humidity, 29.80 baro).
4) Since they use onboard accelerometers, their trap speeds will sometimes be 1-2 mph faster than you may see at the track because their trap speed is the ending mph. At the track, your trap speed is an average mph in the last 66'.
5) All mags run with a full tank of fuel, no weight reduction, and 50lbs of test gear. Most of us don't race at the track "fully loaded".
Before you guys claim the mag drivers crappy, consider this:
1) They're racing on a street surface therefore hooking up off the line could be a problem. They don't use VHT to improve traction like a track does.
2) Private owners that pull better times than the mags are typically racing under great density altitude, often times with air that much denser than sea level air (ie below sea level conditions). This happens a lot at the tracks in the Northeast in Maryland, Jersey, New York, Mass, Canada, and even coastal tracks in Florida in the winter. Also, some tracks are just plain faster than others for no real reason.
3) These owners are also often racing on well prepped tracks and in cars with a 1/4 tank or less of gas and no spare.
All this makes a huge difference in the way a car runs.

Look at the 60' times - this is pretty much how well you launch the car. Notice the driver with the slower trap speed but the faster 1/4 mile has a much faster 60' - by almost .21 seconds! This is why launches are so important in the 1/4 mile and why cars with the AWD launch like the Evo/STI own the Z in the 1/4 mile but the Z walks them on the freeway (stock vs stock). So at the beginning of the 1/4 mile for the second timeslip above, car 1 gets a much better launch than car 2 and pulls ahead. At the end of the 1/4 mile, car 1 is still ahead but car 2 is definitely catching up - hench the higher trap speed. What kind of car were you racing , davidv?

Seriously 100-103MPH trap speeds is oddly enough similiar to what stock EVOs/STis trap at (Some stock 05 EVOs have trapped as high as 106MPH), so in my opinion it's a driver race every single time.
There are also a few more reasons for the discrepancies.
1. The mags test one car with one driver at one place vs. Thousands of cars with thousands of drivers at thousands of places.
Many people will do better or worse than the mags.
2. This is the internet. People can say whatever they want. They don't tend to advertise as much when they suck, but will brag when they're good.
3. People can lie about what "stock" is. Mags don't.
4. People can lie about what their times are. Mags can't.
5. People only post their absolute best ever time with perfect track conditions and traction, not the average decent run.
6. Some cars are faster than others. Some drivers are better than others.
7. Mags don't powershift or do weight reduction.
There have been more than a few LS1 fbody guys running high 12's completely stock in near perfect conditions. Definitely, not the norm, or average. 13.5 at 105 is normal for a best stock time in decent conditions. (just as a comparison)

[QUOTE=BriGuyMax]While I can agree that all stock they are driver's races. EVERY time I went to the track when I was stock, I consistantly trapped 1-2mph higher than the STi's and EVOs there..and I ran into some really good drivers too. Furthermore, every STi and EVO that I ran into before my Turbo install I had no problem with from a highway roll.[
