Default 2007 Gears

Hey all you '07 m/t owners. This question is for those who ran down the 1/4 track with it. How does the extended 7500rpm redline affect the times? The gearing is the same for the new ones, correct? That would mean the car would be able to pull hard all the way to the 7700 fuel cutoff in 3rd gear. Someone said that in the 03-05 Z's you have to let off the gas a bit to stay in third and not bounce off the rev limiter when crossing the line. So far I have seen one '07 time of 13.6, and it seems a little quicker. Is that the result of extra revs, more power, or both?

I have an 03 and finish the 1/4 in 4th gear. I'm pretty sure most do since it tops out in the 80s somewhere with stock rev limiter.

03-05 standard 6600rpm redline 3rd gear maxes out at 88mph, you def need 4th gear. Revups with 7000rpm redline can almost finish in 3rd but still need 4th unless the driver sucks. The HR's can stay in 3rd gear stock.

fuel cut off is 7500, not 7700, yes i was pissed at 1201 miles.

as far as the gears, don't really remember for sure from driving, but the owners manual said top speed in 3rd was in the low 90's, 92 i think, so yes, an 07 would need 4th at the strip. the rear end ratio is the same, but i pretty sure the ratio's in the tranny are a bit different. cause in first gear i get to just over 40, what do the pre DE guy get? also when i dyno'd my car, i took it up to the rev limiter in 4th and i saw 132 on the speedo

i'll redline 3rd on the way home tonight and post when when i get home

i'm going to the track on sunday (if it doenst rain, its supposed to rain ) so i'll keep everybody updated

So are the better times a result of that or the extra power?

7500 fuel cutoff? I could have sworn there was a couple hundred rpm after the redline until it really shut you down. Are you sure? Because 200 rpm would be really hard to see when you are driving fast, and the needle is flying up.

I highly doubt the hr can stay in third gear stock. Seeing that they're trapping well over 100mph, there is just no way. My DE barely sees 85mph in third gear. , no way adding 1000rpms is going to gain more than 15mph unless the gearing is a lot less agressive, which it is not.

Isn't the redline at 7500rpms? No manufacturer ever puts fuel cutoff right at redline, you usually have about 200rpms before the computer cuts out on the fun.

so i hit 103 bouncing off the revlimiter in 3rd, that says that the actual shift would be about 101 and given that jdifolco (https://my350z.com/forum/drag/252803-07-track-results.html) trapped at 104.68, 4th is needed for the quarter.
for those of you intrested, i hit about 70 at the top of second (i was looking at the analog speedo, so i cant give u an exact #)

and for those of u that don't believe me about the fuel cut off, look at how the power drops off right before 7500 rpm
https://my350z.com/forum/engine-and-drivetrain/245890-2007-vq-hr-dyno-results.html (page 5, post 86 for the 6 spd dyno)

here is my dyno on a dyonjet, but they were having trouble getting a tach signal, so the rpm is a little off (the link above was done on a dyno pack)

Id say 103mph is enough for most people, we only have one 07' time I guess we cant assume anything just yet. If anything they are grabbing 4th the last 100 feet. I knew 3rd would be good to over 100mph though and I was right. Thanks for the info warmmilk

but 103 was bounch off the limiter, i could feel the power starting to fall off about 100, i think (<--key word) shifting into 4th i'd get to 103 faster than staying in 3rd

hopefully the weather is good on sunday so that i can get a few runs in trying both methods

Id personally pull 4th before 7000rpm, as the power falls after 6800 anyways...

I have a weaksauce 03' Z. Ive seen a dyno from an HR and knowing the power peak, I can tell you winding 3rd out to 7500rpm's is worthless.

edit-btw standard vq's and revups peak at 6200rpms...

yup you need 4th for the 1/4 3rd tops out at around 101, i think maybe 102 I tried to go all the way and it bounced off the rev limiter right before I finished. Its very close though maybe the last 50 - 100 feet.

I agree. I will try next time. It feels like the car runs out of steam the last 50 feet

Id shift 1-2 @ 7500 and 2-3 @ almost redline, then shift at 6800-7000rpm for the 3-4 shift, but what do I know.
