Wasting your time manually shifting without an aftermarket valvebody... you might think you are doing something but the 'delay' you are talking about are just shift points... it does that with or without your help.

5AT Z's run about a 1/2 second slower if left in drive.

Ive never raced with my Z left in drive because I dont like wasting runs so I cant say if it does or doesnt. I have done it on the street and theres a big difference but thats another story. I do know my maxima runs slower when I leave it in drive.

Hmm.. must be something really strange with the trans setup then.. Never seen an automatic (save for paddle shift setups) that did anything but hit the rev limiter when manually shifted. I could very well be wrong...

half a second seems VERY hard to swallow unless something magical happens in D that doesn't happen in any other gear.

Well swallow it, cuz that is what they turn in drive. I have a 5AT with a couple hundred runs on it. Most of it when it was stock. In manual mode I could chirp the tires in third. That is never going to happen in drive. It ran 13.7-13.9's on a regular basis. In drive it would be mid 14's. I have tried it, I have seen other people try it....it's just the way it is. My tranny had absolutely no hesitation when shifted manually until I put the vortech on it. Now it shifts slow as hell even with an aftermarket vb.
When stock it will hit the rev limiter when manually shifted if you are a crappy driver and don't know enough to shift 300 rpms short of redline. The 5AT is a hot setup for drag/bracket racing.
I don't know what kind of AT you have shifted manually, but there is no reason to hit the rev limiter with a 350Z 5AT unless it is F/I and the tranny is stock.

I've pretty much tried it in every car I've ever driven.... as I said I've never drive the 350Zs auto so you must be right.

Just knowing that a manual valvebody shifts on demand and a stock valvebody shifts when the ECM tells it too.. If you were really doing something usefull shifting why would you need to shift 300rpms ahead of where it shifts unless it was going to shift there anyways?

In manual mode the tranny will allow the rpms to go up until they bounce off the rev limiter, it stays locked into whatever gear you have selected and will not shift. While the 5AT shifts very quickly (faster than most 6MT's) it climbs up about 300 rpm's during the shift. If you shift at redline you will hit the rev limiter hence shifting slightly before. Go to a dealer and try an auto in manual mode and it will become very clear. The only time the tranny will shift out of a gear in manual mode is when it downshifts because you are going too slow for the gear you are in. ie. trying to stay in 5th while going 20mph, it will automatically shift down. When accelerating it is going to stay in whatever gear you put it in until it blows up or you take your foot off the accelerator.

Its actually pretty fun. I shift my car around the city alot now that I have my exhaust on and like to hear it down shift. I also love passing people in 3rd.

I have 3:55 gears so enjoy 3rd too.
you have a good range of speed in 3rd and it is punchy as hell. I use to go through the finish line in the quarter still in 3rd, so it is good for 100 or so with the stock rear end gears.

Well, 1st night back at the track with my new clutch. I got in 16 passes in about 3 hrs (like 12 in the 1st hour )but couldnt nail any of them Either I bogged off the line, spun my tires, or wheelhopped real bad 1/2 way down. General UHP 275 street tires at 29psi hot.

Granted it was 101 temp on the dash with my AITs ranging from 112 to 120 degrees (before my methanol).
Argh. It gets up good the 2nd half but 2.2-2.4 60's are no good.

best for the night was a 8.64 @88. My best is 8.46 @89.

The new clutch slips ok on the street but on the track, I am having a hard time modulating it enough, where i dont bog or dont sit at the line spinning.

There were a few ImportNC guys out there and by chance i got lined up with this nice Z. Pretty sure he beat me on that pass but I trapped like 12 mph faster

Well ordered my 28" drag radials today. Line locks go on today. Got my mini-trailer to haul them, my jack, and a pump to the strip as well.

Hopefully better 1/8th mile in the next month. Then I might make the 100 mile drive to the closest 1/4 mile.

Completely different skillset.

I know awesome road race guys who cant hit 13's in mod'd NA Z's and good drag guys who dont ever hit a corner hard.

Just because you can drive around corners doesnt mean you can be FAST straight

The differences at a drag strip between an awesome driver and avg can be almost 1 second down a measly 1320ft, that differences can be seconds around a course, same damage given the distance.

Well got my 28" tires in. Gotta get them mounted this week and hopefully to the track within the next few weeks to try them out. Also, got my trailer put together, just need to do the floor and the G will be ready to tow my tires/jack/and pump.

Nice!! Why don't you go to Freaky Fridays at the Fayettville dragstrip it's closer than the rock, kinston or jacksonville.

I think they run from 7pm-1am or later so it will be cooler. Just check their schedule for the next one.

Fayetteville is only an 1/8th mile. Dunn Benson is closer for an 1/8th mile. Have to drive to Kinston,Jax, or the Rock for 1/4mile, all ~100 miles each way.

I think you're going to have a hard time fitting your G on that trailer. How far is it to the 1/8 mile track that you're going to run at? I have driven numerous times to the track which is 100 miles each way, with my DR's on. Just have to hope it doesn't rain hard.

Just joking about the trailer comment
