Default Welded diff...possible or not?

Ok.... I have suspension work completed....turbo will be added this week...(not that its needed)...and work has been throughout the car...building for the big boys...anyway...back to the topic... i have heard that you can weld your diff an do just as well. in fact...i know of a few D1 drivers who have welded diff's. its a temporary fix. the reason i bring it up is because i have an open diff at the moment and once i upgrade it really wont make a difference what happens to the open diff because no one will buy that crap so why not weld it?..... if anyone has taken this step please comment... other than that; i will weld it...

...i am fully aware of the different types of differentials and their capabilities...just want to know how well a welded diff will work in a Z.

For drifting it would work well. For city driving and turning at slow speeds it will really suck. It also won't be a differential anymore, not until the welds break at least.

thanks roast....i hear the same from most other people..but they are non-z owners. so i just wanted to make sure that on the z it is still possible. ok cool...not worried about everyday driving ...its a track/ show car only.

i guess weld it is then! (temporary fix!)

How temporary are you talking? With that welded diff you're more prone to breaking other stuff (axles etc) especially if you're going to have a lot of power and see some good track time. You should be able to drift fine with an open diff around any course with your Z, especially since you now have suspension and you're gona have power.

IMO it's not worth the risk of breaking stuff and the effort to weld it when you can just run open.

...plus you'll get more smokeif you're just spinnin one tire

Acts pretty much like a 2-way LSD, I had one in my 240. Like the others said, you get the "scuff scuff scuff" for street driving, but since its a track car no worries.

Its been welded for a year now.... The Z axle is freakin solid.. it aint goin no where unless im putting down over 700HP... For one im not planning on putting down that much power an two... upon completing my other set ups in the vehicle... I plan to instal the Exedy Diff.... I like their set up an the way it runs.

But so far so good... I have been to approximately 3 drifting events in 2006... An during those events... of course multiple runs... so, lets hope it stays solid everywhere else in that suspension!

its pretty common in offroading to weld the spier gears together, to allow for a locked diff.

just exactly how hard would it b to drive on the street? like on a scale of 1 to 10. also, would it have any benefits on a track? or would it just want to slide alot?
