I just yawned really hard a couple of days ago, heard a weird click and that was it. Then it started to hurt, and I couldn't open my mouth a lot. Turns out the guy who's office I randomly stumbled into is a specialist on this stuff. His name is Dr.Goodfellow. I mostly went there cause his office is basically infront of my house, and he seemed like a nice guy from his name
Anyway, I gotta wear these shitty pad things in my mouth that kinda look like braces and make me talk funny.... I am the fail.
Mike, you know anything about this? How screwed am I? The guy told me it could be permanent, but there's also a good chance that my ligaments could heal b/c I'm still young.
IMO "temperomandibular dysfunction" is a very vague diagnosis and I would need more information. Basically it sounds as though you've suffered a one time hyperextension injury in which your mandibular condyle, and/or articular disc were temporarily displaced in front of the mastoid process of the skull. In either case considering your jaw wasn't locked open for an extended period of time, damage to the retrodiscal tissues & ligaments should be very minor. That is to say unless you have a severe underlying condition, but that is unlikely. I typically would just prescribe some non steroidal anti inflammatories and observe your recovery. Soft diet, and no more opening yuour jaw that wide, even if you have to stifle a yawn....

I don't think anything else would be necessary. But I didn't see you myself so my opinion is almost useless. But I have to go, another patient is here.

Sweet, I'm rather encouraged by that. I've never had any problems with it before, and my jaw definitely didn't lock. I didn't even notice that something was wrong till the next day. The other stuff you said seems to match up with what I can recall him saying.
So yea, he basically told me to wear these brace/pouch things to keep me from applying pressure, and I gotta go back on Saturday so he can see what's up.
I really hope that I'm not *******ed with this and my mouth goes back to normal. Eating is such a ***** right now... I have to cut up all my food into small pieces.

Oh yea, Rich, saw Kill the Messenger today, as I obviously had nothing better to do, having taken the day off work and all, and I liked it. Wasn't as good as some of his other stuff, but definitely enjoyable.
