19' Wheels Hurt Tranny?
I have a friend with a SUV who has some big rims on his car. His tranny just went on him due to the size of the rims puting too much stress on the tranny. I was wondering since I have a auto, will the 19' Volk Rims be a problem too my tranny? I was told by someone that Revhigh sells the 19' Volk Rims with tires that are almost the same height and diameter's as the stock 17's. It looks kind of like the size of the 17's with the tires being so small on the aftermarket and the tires so big on the stock. Also, what rims would be the best for drag rims. THanks
P.S. I was thinking of getting my tq converter soon and hope that will stiffen my tranny up soon.

If you go larger that what the car is designed for, Im sure they will have something to say about it. However, a 350z touring comes with 18's that use a 45 series tire i believe if you do the tire diameter calculator a 19 w/ a 35 series tire is essentially the same overall diameter. However the 19 will give you a more sturdy side wall.

What will have something to say about it? I have a auto touring and they come with 17's not 18's. I know that most cars in the mags always run bigger rims and they seem to have no problems. I guess as long as I upgrade the tq converter, I will not get any slip. I am going to go with SGP's tranny upgrade later on down the road when I get my motor built. They say it is good for 800hp, I only need it for 600hp.

I guess I'm just one of those guys that never understood the "look fast" movement when you could actually go fast. Anyways, the larger you go up in diameter the more force has to be applied to get through the same revolution. I would prolly stop at an 18-inch setup but the new Racing Hart's are so damn sexy I might even consider 19s. The Z just looks odd on 20 inch or above wheels. And what ever happened to the thick sidewall muscular look? My choice for the slickest looking wheels on a Z are the SSR Professors, Work VS-XX, 5Zigen Hyper 5ZR and the Racing HART J8.

then I suggest u not to hook up your car since u cant ever REALLY use it to its fullest anyways. besides when are you going to be hitting 150 miles an hour? shoulda just stuck to a toyota prius or something. 19 and 20s will slow down the car slightly but only if not purchased in lightweight racing versions. I have the cp-f tune racing harts, only weigh 19 pounds a rim. lighter than stock. anyways have fun with your Z

Maybe there was a large weight difference in the aftermarket wheels that your friend put on as wheel as a difference from the overall stock diameter of the wheels. In general, when we upgrade wheels whether 18, 19 or 20 we end up getting a size pretty close to stock in most cases and the wheels usually weigh less or similiar to stock so the effect it would have on the tranny would be small i would think.
there is nothing wrong with putting 20's on a car. And they dont have to be 20's to be bling bling. Anything bigger than 20's is a little ghetto though

In either case, my 19" TE37 Volks felt lighter than my stock 18s.
As for your friend having tranny probs in his SUV, my guess is that he had chrome (steel) wheels that weighed a ton, rather than the forged wheels that exist for our car (light weight). As for racing, I'd go 17 or 18s. Keep the 19s for show (I do )
