Default Honest review of the B&M short shifter

I dont care what anyone else says; there is absolutely not one thing wrong with this shifter if installed correctly. It works flawlessly; it does exactly what its supposed to do nothing more and nothing less.

The shifts are precise and exact. With out a doubt it is 10 times better than the stock shifter. Oh yea ! About the vibrations and the rattles, since it mounts directly to the transmission without any plastic for dampning as does the stock unit.

There are no vibrations and no rattles it is as quiet as a mouse !
It does sit a little shorter than stock which is where it belongs. It has a much better feel to it. I love this shifter !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

There is not one bad thing to say about the shifter. Exactly the opposite, its perfect in every way. Oh yea ! Let the drive line specialist you use for your 3.9 install put your new shifter in for you. It was well worth the 60.00 for one hour to let them do it.

They do this type of work day in and day out for years and years. Even though I can do things as such myself; sometimes its better to spend the money and let a specialist do it anyway.

I give the B&M shifter an A+

If you live anywhere near Las Vegas I used Dans Driveline. Wayne is my mechanic and hes one of the best in the united states. Ive been going to Dans Driveline for over 20 years, and their work is beyond excellent.

FYI if your mechanic does a good job for you always tip at least 5%. Its also a good idea in case something goes wrong he will be more than happy to go out of his way for you.

Ive said enough. PS I decided against the Rogue because it only has a 20% throw reduction and uses the plastic oem part for dampning. You loose 13% because of the stock part.

I love mine as well. I've found that, if you get rough and try to horse it, you'll miss shifts with this and any shifter including the stock one.

how smooth are your shifters? When I installed mine months ago i didn't use all the grease in the tube (used about half) for the shifter pocket, and I noticed mine to be pretty notchy. I know it's from the grease etc... just wanted to get your opinions on it....
I liked the shifter too

I'm not sure what everyone's definition of notchy is. I do know that the B&M is really precise and smooth enough for fingertip shifting. Just lift, pull it out of gear, tap the clutch and rock it in another gear. I put mine in so long ago that I don't remember how much grease I used. I did use a marine grade though.

Thumbs up B&M

It is a great Short-shifter, but at times a little notchy and definately vibrates, but I love it.

It is extremely notchy but does its job well and significantly reduces the throw. I've also noticed that it tends to strip some shift ***** threading as it destroyed my Razo power drift ****. Also, It has problems with reverse lockout and with 5th gear engagement even with serveral guide plate adjustments. After alot of research I think the Rogus shifter is the best compromise of performance and smoothness. Also, people tend to unconditionally support mods they have installed so (dons flame suit).

Really suprised yours is vibrating. Was your stock shifter vibrating ? They say things are different from car to car.

I was expecting vibration after my install and it is no different than my stock unit.

Any time you shorten your throw the shifts will be notchy. I dont use the word notchy, I use the word precise. ( Precise shifts ).

I dont like the feel of the stock shifter. Too slopy. Some would call it smooth shifting. The longer the throw the smooter the shifting.

When I want to race I dont have time for smooth un-notchy shifting. I need notchy precise quick shifts with less room for error which is what notchy ( precise ) shifts give you.

That is why I am giving this shifter such a great review. It does exactly what it is supposed to.

I still feel it is safer and smarter to use a drive line shop for the install. Most people with problems did it themselves. The ones who did it themselves and have had no problems are good enough to work in a drive line shop themselves.

drive with the thing in your car for a year and put 25k plus miles on it...youll beg someone with a stock shifter to trade you...the older it gets the worse it rattles on quick acceleration....

speaking from experiance...i still have it in my car and hate it...and if you go back about a year in my posts you will see i gave this thing a very high review just like you guys....

I was ready to accept the fact that my shifter might rattle. From what ive read it seems all short shifters rattle.

In order to shift quicker the shifter must be connected directly to the transmission without any plastic or damponing material ie the stock shifter; its not metal to metal ie the B&M shifter. But for now mine is as quiet as a mouse.

Im still sticking with this shifter unless the Evo or
C's shows up in the picture. For a charge of only an hour I dont mind changing shifters once a month.

Seriously if mine does start to rattle I will still enjoy it more than stock until something else proves to be better.

I wonder what key mine will be in.

161.61 7 bucks or so for shipping
http://store.yahoo.com/import-store/bmshthsh3503.html

mine is very smooth, when I moved the stock removed from car its very sticky w/ that plastic piece. The first time I installed I tightened it too tight which made it stick and hard to shift. After adjusting it it works fine, no rattles or any other complications that some say they have.

My B&M Short Shifter has been removed from the car and I would be willing to sell it for a supreme discount. It comes with the box and all hardware needed to install.

IMO I bet it's not as good because of using that plastic OEM peice the shifter sits on

actually i know a fix for the shifter just havent messed with it...where the 2 metal shafts come together if you seperate them you will see about 6 plastic o rings that break and then the 2 peices of metal vibrate together..im sure replacing them with rubber o rings would solve the problem...just havent had the time to do it...but over time the rattle gets so loud under acceleration its very anoying...and this is coming from a guy that had headers , non resonated testpipes and dual exhaust...so i dont mind loud...once i pull it apart and replace those broken plastic orings with rubber ill post how it helped..need to do it soon anyhow as my shifter has finally worked out of adjustment and im having probs going in fifth every once in a while...so i need to re adjust that plate...

I just installed my shifter last weekend and already the rattle is unbearable. Would not using enough grease have anything to do w/ it because I know I didnt use that much grease while I was doing it...

Also, those two plates you are talking about-- are you talking about the guide plate and the blue one that comes w/ the B&M??
I was thinking that some sort of gasket or something rubber between the two would help with the rattle. Is that basically what you are saying in the above post?

I have a really hard time shifting into 1st gear when I drive it in the morning and it's cold outside. After it warms up, it's all good.
