Default 4th gear around 80mph felt like hitting revlimiter

I just installed a couple new things this past weekend, hf cats and plenum. Sunday afternoon, i was merging onto the interstate and gunned it. I was going about 40 in 4th and then i gunned it. Next thing i know, it feels like i hit the rev limiter and I shifted to 5th. I thought 4th gear went to a higher speed before hitting the rev limiter, but i can't find info from searching. I didn't notice any other problems. I dont hear any leaks after install and there is no idling problem or loss of power besides this one instance. I might have been going a little more than 80 but i was in the process of merging so i wasn't looking down

I've also read some posts before about maxing out the MAF but i thought that was only with FI.

Any ideas what happened? At about what speed do you hit 6600 rpms in 4th gear?

You likely engaged your traction control. Sounds like that is the problem...happpens to me all the time, so in a straight line, I always disengage the TC or VDC

Traction?? I'm not following GQ, can you explain more. I had VDC on, i never turn it off actually. Are you saying I lost traction at 80mph? I know you know what you are talking about, i'm just not following lol. I've gunned it getting on the interstate before but never felt that. I was pretty sure i didn't hit the rev limiter but just wanted to double check. Thanks for the info guys.

I dont know if my first post made sense. I went from about 40mph to around 80mph in 4th gear when i felt the "wall".

When you hit the rev limiter, the power to the engine is automatically shut off and this is abrupt.

When VDC is on and you lose traction on both wheels, power is shut off in a very similar fashion.

I know you know what both of these systems do and how they work, I just worded it this way purely for comparison's sake.

Does this help?

it's possible you lost traction.. it happens a lot to me when I least expect it at any speed when flooring it at just the right time.. and now that it's colder out, I lose traction quite frequently with my summer tires and lots of rear camber.. Feels like I'm hitting a wall while accelerating..

Did you see a small light flash on the center instrument cluster? near where the shift light is?

Yeah, but there was no loss of traction. I dont have enough power to cause that. Thats why i'm concerned. Although, i guess there could have been some traction loss while merging or maybe hitting a little bump. I can't say i really noticed but i dont know what else would cause that. That does make sense though. I guess i'll have to see if it happens again.

I thought that was what he meant, just never had it happen before so i didn't think it was possible on a straightaway at that high of speed.

Thanks guys, i feel better.

How do you know you didn't lose traction? You would rarely feel the loss of traction with VDC or TCS on.. what you feel is the car jerking you while you were accelerating.. or the car won't accelerate as fast..

You could have hit a wet patch or something you couldn't see on the road.. the stock tires suck as we all know..

You guys are probably right. That is the only thing that makes sense. I dont remember seeing a light flash but i'm sure i could have easily missed it since i wasn't really looking at the dash (i was merging and looking in the mirrors). I just thought it might have been something caused by the install of the plenum so i just wanted to make sure.

Hey TT, I know what happened, you were going so fast, you sucked the car in front of you right through the filter and into the engine!

lol this happened to me on the way to work...punched it in 3rd gear...cooking on the straight away....alot of bumps on 370 towards shady grove rd east...and car bounced and lost traction just alittle bit under hard acceleration and TCS came on....it does happen....my rear tires are soo bad now...when its raining and i tap the gas hard in 1st i jump to the rev limiter almost instantly....pretty bad...maybe i should get some new tires??
