Tilton ?'s
hey guys, ive searched but could not find the answers im looking for.
I am looking to buy the Tilton clutch/flywheel setup, but i am not sure if this will make me LOSE any speed on top end?
i kno that it revs very fast, so my next question is, is this setup going to be ok when using my 100 shot NX kit? (i dynoed 330hp - 350tq to the wheels so i need to kno that it can handle it?)
if any1 can answer these ?'s i would greatly appreciate it!

no, it will not change your top end, all it does is more efficiently move power from the crank to the rear end
if you're going to spray with it, make sure you get the semi-street clutch (or the carbon clutch) as the full-street kit will not withstand that power (well, maybe once

the street version is said to be able to handle a max power of 300rwhp
I've been told it can hold more power but it isn't officially supported.
To mhy knowledge, the clutch won't break by using too much power, it just won't grab and go into gear. It would probably grind the clutch hard and not be a good thing for it, but I'm not sure it'll just break.

It drives alright. I'm still not used to it really though I'm not exactly a pro at driving stick or anything.

You notice the "slightly" better acceleration in 1st and 2nd gear?
I ran the numbers and it is a ~1,100 lb reduction in rotational inertia in first, like 670 in 2nd and 300 something in 3rd.
yeah it is absolutely amazing in 1st and 2nd gear! Also every time you rev in neutral it sounds like an F1 race car
5th and 6th don't have much difference I don't think though I'm sure it's better than stock.
It isn't easy to drive over small speed bumps really slow. For example, driving onto a dyno's rollers is really hard cause it's so easy to give it too much or not enough gas. I have the street version.
Just take caution that as much as a performance mod it is, it really does have a negative effect on day to day city drivability. I'm in the habbit of reving to 2-3k rpms to get the car going on a green light. That seems to be easier to drive that way. However when there's a cop next to you, you tend to rethink that and try to drive quietly - then you can stall. It's mainly cause if you try to get the car going as quietly and "normal" as possible, as soon as the clutch begins to grip, if you're not being forceful on the gas pedal, the tact just DROPS like a rock - and does it so fast you can't react fast enough to give more gas. So I think it's fair to say when I'm driving, I draw a lot of attention from reving high to get into 1st gear.

My tires have definitely suffered since getting this clutch/flywheel -- the stock rays/rubber will last you about a couple thousand miles, but after that you're definitely going to want larger wheels/shoes -- i'm saving up for 9's in the front and 10.5's in the rear
Oh yeah, first and second are crazy now. Its only getting into those gears that is the hard part, there is no such thing as starting off in second any more. Strangely I've only had my clutch in a couple of weeks and it is toasted, all it does is slip now so I'm going to ask Jason about it monday.
I was also wondering what rpm everyone else drops the clutch at? I have to rev it up to 3k to get it to go smoothly and I thought that is what killed my clutch so fast. I think it is possible to launch smoothly around 1500, the problem is the tach goes up and down so quickly its hard to get it there just right.

yeah, i only rev it to 1500-2000 and then go in 1st.... i don't hear the normal sub-2500 grinding in 1st, only 2nd+
i've launched as low as 1000-1200 when i had a cop next to me, but it was pretty jerky/squeaky -- now adays, 2k is the normal spot, any higher than that and i can't maintain traction (can't imagine that the 3.917/cusco RS going on next week will help at all
)
also had the nissan folks check out my clutch discs after 5k miles w/ the tilton, and they were just like new

I have had the Semi-street since the begining of summer. To much of a pain in my eyes. Love the performance gains, but I am sick of not wanting to drive the Z in heavy traffic or anywhere that has hills. In a couple of months when the sun comes back, I am switching the tilton out for the Exedy (more than likely). I would rather have good drivability and good performance over super pereformance VERY BAD drivability.
The clutches were explained like this. In a stock Z, you can slip the clutch to get going, say 100%. The Semi-street tilton slips say 5%. THe street tilton is like 15% and the carbon tilton about 20-25%, and the Exedy is 90%. If you are running NO2 or FI the street will not work. And if you try to have nice starts on the tilton and hear a squeal, that's the clutch life fading.

Clutch & Flywheel do not change any gearing ratios. They only lighten the weight on the crank and drivetrain. With any flywheel and clutch install it will not effect the over all top speed of the car. Although with the lighter set up you will reach top speed quicker
