Hey, I have the base model Z 6 speed. That model doesnt come with posi. I want posi, where should i get it? Any help?

 

First of all welcome to the year 2005 and the import world. That being said you are looking for a LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIAL. Since you have the base model the only options are to swap for a stock VLSD unit, get the Nismo LSD kit which includes the stub axels, lsd, shims, and all other pieces needed, or go for one of the Cusco units but then you will need to buy the shims, stub axels, etc from nissan.

sorry for the noob question and flame on but please answer the quest. What exactly is the lsd, is it like traction control? B/c my car cant even move in the snow

 

use the internet to find out what an LSD is.

basically, it allows the engine to turn one wheel when the other has no traction (ie spinning). yes, getting one will improve your mobility in snow.

 

Officially, Positraction is GM's designation for their various LSDs (limited slip differentials). Although, somehow it has become the generic term for any type of differential locker. Basically, rednecks say Positraction when refering to their 4x4 trucks or maybe a '60s musclecar.

Does this situation remind anyone else of that commercial for Polaner all-fruit where the guy asks, "Could you please pass the jelly?"

A LSD may not be the answer. When I installed a LSD in my truck, the rear kicked out randomly in slick conditions. My Z seems to have the same characteristic on rainy days. I suggest you research snow tires. If the snow is so deep that you think you may need more traction to move through it, you should probably invest the $1000 of LSD money into a beat up 4x4 truck.

 

I agree, you may have to go with snow tires. I have a touring with LSD and it won't move in the snow, because it's on stock tires. Even with a limited slip diffential, the tires just can't get any traction on snow or ice, so they just spin all day long.

 

oh yeah, forgot that your limiting factor was the tires.

mikeyj - get snows if you're still planning on driving the z in the winter. they'll cost less than any accident you get into.

i was forced to drive the miata after a snow dump when my regular beater wouldn't start and snow tires with a limited slip made the car unstoppable.

 

anyone know of any good snow tires for the z?

Wow I guess you gotta do what you gotta do. I would buy a beater but its everyones own idea so I don't have any say. Be careful though.

 

i def would but being only 23 and in new york my insurance would probably go up another 2gs a year as well

why you guys are going so gaga over a helical LSD on a RWD car is beyond me....Quiafe makes great units indeed, but a helical for a RWD is such a compromise in terms of performance

 

anyone will do. just look on tire rack.... bridgestone, michelins, yoko. even the cheap, less main stream brands will be better than what you have now.

 

About the helical LSD's, if I understand it right, it transfer power to other wheel with more traction based on the amount of traction that the other wheel has (% of spinning wheel).

However, if the spinning wheels has 0 traction, for instance, 60% x0=0! This means no transfer to power to non spinning wheel when it has zero traction. I think this is bad.

With the clutch type, you always have a certain percentage transferred (depends on your setting), because it based on clutch resistance. That's why I like this type better.
