Default What does CEL do and how to get rid of it?

I'm getting test pipes for my Z and I hear everyone is getting CEL's from this. What does it do to the car when the light is on? Retard timing? And is there any way to get rid of it and still run the test pipes?

A CEL can mean a thousand and one things, but in relation to testpipes it is telling you the cats are gone/not working. The ecu may adjust A/F ratio in an attempt to heat up the catalyst, but probably doesn't even do that.

Searching would have brought you to this thread, but obviously the search feature wasn't working when you posted this, so I decided to help you out.

to turn off Check Engine Light... you need to rest it.

Nissan's suggestion is to take it to their dealer and have the cause (the code) looked at and once the problem is fixed, they will reset it.

If you are a DIY kind of person, get an OBD II Scanner and you can read the error code, fix it and reset the CEL light.

Yeah but the questions still remains is there a way to correctly fix the cel while still keeping the test pipes? Can you measure the power to the oxygen sensor after the cats and run the same resistence. Should take care of the problem.
