Default ATS Single Carbon Clutch Initial Review

I had me trans and clutch changed today. I installed the ATS single carbon clutch.

I wasn't prepared for the shuddering when engaging the clutch in 1st gear from a stop. It's alot more severe than I was prepared for. It's not minor in any way. Maybe I have to adjust my style to driving this type of clutch. It definetly grabs much harder and quicker than stock. I just started driving it, and I'm no where near the end of the 200 mile brake in period. Maybe the shuddering will decrease but I would think not. They do warn you about the shuddering on the ATS website. At least they are honest and don't hide this fact.

The light single mass flywheel makes the cement mixer sound below about 2100 RPM. That I can live with. It definetly has the potential to bother someone. I could care less. But it's definetly there.

yeah it will shudder with any high performance clutch until you get use to how it engages. the reason why it shudders now is because u are use to riding the clutch out of first. its an on or off situation with your new clutch or pretty much any and every high performance clutch

Also the lighter flywheel makes this happen. If you release the clutch at a higher rpm point this will help also. The shuddering tends to settle down a little once driven a while.

The single disc has the harshest engagement..believe it or not. The twin near stock engagement, and the triple is butter smooth. Some cars make make more noise at idle than others...I could never figure out why.

See the triple here on the shop car is very very on/off. In other words the point of where you can feel it grabing and the point where it actaully grabs is very very small. Odd...

When someone first gets in the car, they will likely think it's on/off. After driving it for 30 mins, it feels stock. I guess that is the best way to describe it.

With the OEM clutch, the clutch engages very high up in the travel. With the ATS's, its much lower in the travel. So I think its just a matter of adjusting to the engagement point.

I agree with all the coments especially the engagment point. I would like to raise it up to where it was.

After a few days now I am used to the clutch and its on off characteristic. I was driving like I was engaging the stock clutch and holding the pedal in its place until the clutch engaged as stock, but it doesn't engage. It slips and chatters big time. As said the clutch is either engaged or disengaged. No grey area. But I am used to it now, and I can drive it without thinking about it, and there is little or no chattering.

I'm heading to NC for my TN install today !!!!

Noice! ^^^

I am sorry for mischaracterizing the feel of the ATS clutch. I should have said, that after a day worth of driving, it will engage just like stock. The first time you get in the car, you might stall it, since the engagement point is lower...I actually like it better this way.

+1....I hated the high engagement point of the stocker. My ATS engagement is much lower and a lot easier to drive.

not really the right clutch for any FI setup, as they simply won't hold torque like the twins.

The single disks are very grabby - no way around it unfortunately, but they are a bit lighter than the twins and less expensive

As I recall it's around 22-23lbs for the whole clutch/flywheel assembly

What is your experience with the single carbon ATS clutch not holding torque?

I paid $1560 shipped.

none with the ATS single specifically, but with integrated singles in general (whether they be carbon or metal disks - have not found either to make a significant difference)By integrated I mean single plate clutch/flywheels) - they are great for NA setups, as they are lighter than the twin disk counterparts, but compared to the twins, they only hold a fraction of the torque, and are extremely grabby
