Lightbulb Neutral Safety Switch *?*

What purpose does it serve on a MT 350Z and where exactly is it located? I've tried using the search engine and nothing. I thought I blown my transmission because it was stuck in 4th gear but they told me I didn't and it was just a blown neutral safety switch. I ask them how can that happen and they said speed shifting. Does that mean I'm shifting too fast or could the part been a malfunction of nissan product? TIA

Never heard of a neutral switch on a MT. AT cars have a neutral switch so you can only start them in N or P. There is a switch on the clutch pedal that requires you to have it pressed to get the car to start.

Looking at the FSM, sure enough there are two switches in the MT. The "Back-up lamp" and "Neutral position" switches.

My question is what purpose could a neutral safety switch serve on a MT? I talk to somebody I know about it and he said it could be from me shifting hard like with a bunch of force with speed. Then maybe coming into the gear at an angle. Now that I think about it I got stuck in 4th gear which is straight back from 3rd, so how is it possible to break this device with no angle entry? Do all MT come with this device?

I found out all MT have this device and it's purpose is to help start the car. When the device malfunction on my car it was in forth gear and was locked. Now the question still is how was I able to start the car and drive it to nissan in forth gear? The part is an electronic device that malfunction on my car and was replace today. Nissan told me to come and pick up the car whenever I can and that it is ready. Sorry for me misinforming everybody that I had a blown transmission. Nissan drove like it was suppose to be driven and said transmission is strong and good.

There are a bunch of references to the Neutral/Park switch signal in the ECU section of the FSM. It seems to come into play for all kinds of stuff.

Maybe the physical switch busted and it jammed up the shift mechanism and that was keeping you locked into 4th hear.

The MT will start in any gear so I don't think the switch stops you from starting the car. It's the clutch switch that stops you from starting.

One of the main purposes of the switch is to prevent no load reving. If the car is in N then you arn't supposed to be able to rev past a certain point. Its a switch very similar to the reverse switch in the tranny (the switch that turns on your back up lights). The PNP switch should not effect the operation of the tranny in any way. It simply goes to ground when you are in N. Sounds like Dave is right, the switch broke and physically is stopping your tranny from shfting. I don't think speed shifting could cause it to break, thats a strange one. Make sure you ask for the broken parts back, especially if they are trying to deny you warranty work.

It's cover under warranty still because I only have 29k on my 03'. Thanks ya'll for shedding some light on this subject. It confuse me but now I'm getting a better idea of the purpose of this device.

One more question how can something electronic as this device stop you from moving something mechanical such as your MT? The mechanics of this is confusing me.

There is an electrical signal going through the switch, but the switch is mechanical in nature. Switches have contacts in them, and a trigger of some sort. When the tranny is shifted in to N something has to change the state of the switch. So, there has to be physical contact between the switch and the shifter. If the switch broke apart inside the tranny it is possible that a piece of the switch wedged in between the shifter and something else in the tranny.
