Gas is cheap these days so I don't really watch the mileage, though.

The key here is the engine. The low rev engine has alot more torque in the low rpms than the high rev engine. Most of the daily driving done with the low rev engine will be in the engines peak torque range. Most of the daily driving with the high rev engine will not be done in the peak torque range. The low rev engine does not have to work as hard because of this and gets better MPG. This is a very simplistic explanation but gets the basic point across. This is one of the big reasons why Diesel engines have higher MPG on average (see the VW 1.9 turbo diesel offered on the jetta, golf, and bug). A diesel makes alot of torque under 2000 rpms, where most daily driving is done.

I've been getting gas at Cosco but I think I'm seeing less mileage with Cosco gas. It's has up to 10% enthanol and I think it burns cleaner but is less efficient.
