Stock LSD Burning Oil
Hi all,
I haven't posted for quite some time, and I was trying to find the racing forum that used to exist, but for some reason I can't locate it. But this will be just as good.
I have a 2003 350Z Performance with 73,000 miles. I've been to about 8 track days and maybe 25-30 AutoX and at the last two track days I've burned up the fluid in the rear differential (had to change after each event - one in October and the second in December, so not much mileage on the fluid on the second track day). I've changed the fluid a few times at a local shop, so it is possible that they put in fluid that was not compatible with the higher temps seen at track days. It's also possible that with ~70K miles the diff is worn enough to overheat even with the correct fluid.
Anyway, my question is this:
Has anyone else had problems with burning diff fluid (smells like a strong natural gas odor emanating from under the car)? If so, what did you do to fix it?
I am considering an aftermarket LSD, but since I do so much daily driving I'd like something that is very streetable. I'm also considering going to the junkyard and buying a stock LSD with fewer miles. Finally, I am thinking about experimenting with fluids to see if I can find one that works well with my current, high mileage LSD.
I'd like to hear what you guys think and if anyone has any insight to this problem.
Thanks,
D'oh!
