Default I'm really surprised that someone hasn't done this.....

I'm talking about a serious N/A build-up with high compression forged internals, cams, lighter valvetrain components, etc. I know it's much more economical to go FI, but I'm really surprised that we haven't really heard about at least somebody doing this

You don't see it because of the return on investment. You would spend $10k and still make 100hp less than a turbo kit.

Yup! It will be done soon though and as Z's get cheaper and people truly race them at the circuit you will see more high revving z's screaming down the straightaways. There is something about a crazy sounding NA motor that a turbo can't match

i don't know.. to me it sounds like too little output for such an extensive build... 290hp? some people are getting close just on bolt ons

290 hp but you have 2k almost 2k more rpm to play with
.. if you find hte area under the curve, its actually more than a turbo

we shall see how it turns out soon!

As I said before, in australia, we all have around 20 to 25% drivetrain loss on most of the dyno machines we use down here, and my baseline is around 220rwHP (with crawford cats, nismo flywheel, nismo exhaust, air filter, lightweight pulley)... and that 220rwHP still gives me JUST slightly more than 280HP at the engine (since those exhaust systems just FREE up HP, they don't create HP). And with the new N/A setup that I am going to run, I am expecting to get 70rwHP in gain and I think that's actually quite a lot for a N/A tuning already though... If I calculate correctly, with 290rwHP on aussie dyno machine, we might be looking around around 362HP or more @ the engine since a stock Ferrari 355 pulls out 279rwHP on the same dyno machine that I am using and it produces 380HP at the engine... my calculation is being at the conservative side, don't wanna disappoint myself though...

cheers,

richie

This will prompt some flames, but..
You could swap an SR20 in and make the same power, easily more if you wanted, and save 200lbs off the front end of the vehicle. Even if you make 320hp at the wheel, you've caught up to an entry level supercharger system on power, and lighter than a boosted VQ would be, but a SR would make that without flinching and have plenty of room for more with a substantial weight reduction.
Now, having said that, I say go for it, and as i posted in Richie's other thread, rev the **** out of this motor and let us all know how it sounds. The respect for putting down over 300whp NA would probably be worth it, and the sound to die for at a track as it goes screaming by. I give Richie and anyone else (Rickdogg?) who tries this great respect, and I know there have been plenty of SR threads already, but I just wonder why no one is really interested in an SR swap for these power levels. I suppose the thought of a four banger turns people off, but an SR revving to 9K with light boost sounds like a pissed off 'Busa and makes great power. It makes more sense to me than an all NA VQ from a performance standpoint, unless drag racing is what you live for.. then you might as well build and boost our big V6.
Speedracer, the money is the thing, as people have said. NA is expensive, and swaps are discouraging. FI is easier and retains a sense of factory engineering I suppose. Food for thought.

I hardly consider this whiny, esp with only 9psi, and for a lot less than a VQ to reach those hp #'s.

i meant whiny by sound

8K rpm on a 4cly is nothing close to the 8k rpm of a V6

True. There's no arguing over the sound of the VQ at full song, at 8k- as I posted, i can't wait to hear it. The only other V6 I've heard that high is a Honda NSX. GT3 also, but its a boxer and they have their own properties.
