Dealership did not secure shifter linkage boot
I had my tranny replaced in the Z back in October some time due to a 4th-5th gear lock up. i got the car back...and it hasnt really felt the same since. but anyway, i was getting the oil changed last week at a reputable tire and wheel place here in town...and one of the mechanics called me out to the shop. he said he had something to show me. took me under the car and informed me that a boot that seems to be for the shifter linkage at the bottom of the tranny was just dangling on the driveshaft. the driveshaft had been slapping it against the driveline tunnel and eating away at this boot....which im assuming is meant to keep the grease inside the linkage assembly and water, dirt, grime out of it. i took the car up to the dealership their next business day, cause i had to get it inspected anyway, and informed them of the matter...this was Monday of this week 1/2/06. i informed the rep at the front desk about the findings and he was like "ok, we'll look at it" after waiting for a while for the inspection to get done the rep said i was ready. he gave me a receipt and said everything was good with the inspection. i said, "well what about that boot laying on the driveshaft?" he said, "yea, we dont have that part in stock so we ordered it..youll get a postcard in the mail letting you know when you can come in and schedule an appointment with us."
now is this a problem i should be concerned about? i know these driveshafts are supposed to be super sensitive to scratches and such...but it looks like the only damage i could see was some surface marks on the driveshaft....simply rubs. but thats just from a quick observation by me, no serious scratches were evident. but also, what about the linkage assembly..it seems to me that any damage has already been done and the assembly should be replaced. i wanna hear what the smart Z mechanics on here have to say that are really familar with these driveshafts and linkages. thanks.

the part that was not secured was some kind of boot on the bottom of the tranny and right above the drive shaft...it looking like the shifter linkage boot to me. i dnt have pics of it though. the car isnt daily driven...but its been driven a decent amount since the new tranny. nothing feels to weird now...maybe a hard shift every now and then where its hard to get into a gear. but im worried that damage could be done later on down the road when the warranty is out.
do not worry about. that is simply a dust boot. There really isnt all that much underneath there. when the boot comes in, ask them if they can just take out the 1 shifter bolt there and wipe everything off and put a little grease on it and put it back together and stick the new boot on.
the driveshaft will be fine, and the shifter will all be fine... unless you have driven thru a sandstorm since then... you might want to wipe it off.

I had my transmission replaced and I had the same problem. When I went to change the clutch, all I found that the only thing left of that boot was a haning piece of rubber. I bought a new boot for $6.45, cleaned everthing, inspected & lubricated the linkage, and made sure I put the new one on perfectly. I'm sure your car will be fine.
