Default A girl in distress. Transmission Grind.

Wondering if some of you guys can give me help. I bought my Z two months ago, and started getting some grinds when I shift into 3rd gear. The grind only comes in at about 6000rpm. It happens a lot when my friends drive it and the grind is pretty loud. It doesn't seem to happen when I drive slow.

Should I bring my car into the dealer for warranty? I don't really like talking to the service department, they are never very helpful. THey make it seem like my fault everytime I bring my car in.

There is a known issue of defective trannys that will grind into various gears. Definately take it to the dealer, and insist they replace it for free. If they give you a hard time, contact Nissan North America Customer Service, and they will take care of you. Be persistent...good luck!

The common Nissan solution is to return the car at the end of the day and say can not duplicate. I recommend that the service manager drives the car, and you are the passenger.

I just moved to Boston and would be interested in the same information. i've heard of two dealerships here, IRA and heard bad things about Quirk.

easy, don't let your friend drive your car.

this is going to be another one of those threads where the solution is on the 1st page yet it extends to 10+ pages b/c for the title....sneaky sneaky

Had the same issue with my 03, like omernazeer said, take it to the dealer and they will replace it completely covered under your warranty. You might have issues though if your car is over 36k miles and you didnt purchase the extended warranty..

That will not matter. Nissan has a 5 year/60,000 drive-train warranty. Nissan replaced mined with 40,000 or so on it. I had the same problem. It would always grind in the high revs, and was fine during normal shifting.

You just gave me an idea about your title. Now when everytime I need help quick, I just write "Girl in distress" need help quick! That would surely get me answers fast and also would let me know who the pervs are in here

dude you crack me up! love the new bout poster.

seriously, grinding in third is a very common problem. i had mine replaced for grinding in third and the trans they put in wouldn't go into fifth, like someone already mentioned. now luckily any trans replacements they do will get the upgraded 06 trans with the stronger syncros.

Default Gear Grinding

Question, you said the car grinds in 3rd and not going into fifth - what do you mean? Literally a grinding noise while the car is in 3rd going down the road or its hard to put the stick in position?

I am not an experienced manual driver so I'm wondering if I'm having an issue or its just me being a bad driver, both possible.

So going into second gear in high revs its difficult to get the stick to go into the second position, I get quite a bit of push back even with clutch to the floor. Getting the stick into the various positions is notchy but only really hard in second. Occasionally the car just won't let me put it in the second position (like its blocked) while coasting to a stop with clutch down.

My car has about 52K and bought used so i'd like to know if this is a sign of something going wrong so I can get it fixed under warranty before it goes kaput.

What you describe is pretty typical of the 350Z transmission. 2nd gear is notchy, especially when cold.
Installing a synthetic gear oil in the transmission may help smooth things out a bit.

As stated over & over as well there being a post of about 100 pages dedicated to this issue it is a common problem & dealers will BS you until you send them a message that you mean buisness. The reason is no dealer likes warrenty work because they lose money. Tell them there is a Tech Service Bulletin on this issue & to check the cpu & to replace the tranny in 1 day as stated in the TSB & you need a rental at NO CHARGE TO YOU. for the day or however long they are going to take but NNA says 1 day.

That being said There is several ways I like to bust up a service dept. when they are being asses. You can do a search on Tranny Problems in the subject heading in an advanced search & then quote them the TSB & print the post & tell them that they are full of BS. Once you set out that you can not be walked all over then take you seriously. The other is to call NNA & hand them the phone once you get a rep. on the line. That one works well. Be firm & kick them in the mouth so, you don't get this BS again.

They should replace it under warrenty & provide a rental at no charge. Bottom line. I talked to the service manager several times. The store manager once. Now I get the hello MR. ----- How are you today? =)
