Its the rear end gearing. Stock MT final drive is 3.55. Some, like me, have switched to a 3.9 ring and pinion in order to change the final drive. This shortens the final drive to improve accelaration. The trade off is the engine turns at a higher rpm at any give speed which equates to slightly worse fuel economy. I actually use sixth gear now.

That's when you drive the car for the last time j/k.

That is the gear that translates the rotation of the driveshaft into rotation of the axels/wheels. It does gear it down. The final drive ratio gives you the number of revolutions of the driveshaft needed to achieve one full revolution of the wheels. Your final drive ration on your 6mt is 3.55, which means that your driveshaft has to do about 3 and a half turns to turn your wheels once.

Your alternative is to change it to a 3.9 final drive gear (available throuch central20 and 350evo). The effect is the same as with your tranny, you will rev quicker in lower gear, but your top speed is more in higher gear. You will accrelerate faster, but you will be sacrificing some top speed in each gear. You will need to keep slightly higher RPM to keep a certain speed (obviously your gas consumption will be slightly more, but who cares?!).

This is a awesome upgrade for a NA car. It also work well with superchargers, but seem to be bad for running turbos. So consider it while keeping in mind your future plans. Actually there are people with really high hp# that put the final drive from the 5AT car (it's around 3.3) into their 6MT. You should be able to guess what effect this has by now.

Hopefully this helps.

See your engine is rated at 274 torque.
However, if you were to run your engine directly to the wheels (at a 1:1 rate) you would have to give a lot of gas to overcome the torque needed to start moving, and give it a lot of gas to get going, and you probably top out at around 120mph. In order to overcome that, you have a transmission. Each gear shortens the flywheel...so 1st gear lets say its 3:1. It will make ur engine put 3X more torque at the cost of a shorter gear (so you'll redline 3X faster in perfect conditions). After your transmission multiplies the torque, the final drive multiplies it one more time to your wheels. The stock 6MT comeds with 3.55 final drive. So it multiplies the torque that your tranny put out after multiplying by the gear ratio by the final drive ratio to give you the final torque output. Note that a dyno is load based, and divides the actual torque measured by the gear ratios to get the numbers you see on a dyno chart. Realisticly in 1st gear you get around 600 torque tot eh ground, and realisticly in 6th gear you get about 180ish torque to the ground, at the expensse of a longer gear so more speed... Its all gears and physics.
