How long does the stock clutch last?
For normal drivers? I realize the more you beat on it, the less time it will last. If I buy a used Z, is there any way to tell if the guy beat the crap out of it or not?

Hypnoz, we meet again
Anyways, I own an 05 so my clutch and car are pretty new. However, none of the used car buyers that post up in the forums have ever said anything about their clutch being worn out to my recollection.
Alberto has raved about the stock clutch over and over again. It is a very good clutch as long as the driver is not totally insane or idiotic... it can slip a LOT without burning. (Judging burning by the smell) I've only burned it once to my recollection, that was while backing up slowly on a steep hill for like 200 yards because I had to get out of the way of a huge truck. Even some crazy launches I've done, which weren't the most artful/skillful, did not result in a burning smell.
It wouldn't be my first concern if I were looking to buy a used Z. Just have a small account of $2-3k that you keep seperate for incidentals on the car and if worst comes to worst, you can buy a new clutch. Most likely you'll end up replacing the rotors/brake pads way before the clutch anyway.

I don't know why you should be worried. My car has 60k miles and is like new. I take great care of the vehicle, even though I drive it pretty hard most of the time. I think your concern should be the previous owner and how he took care of the car.
With "normal driving", most clutch will las about 75~100K miles.
My friend had a Camry 5MT who drove his OE clutch to about 180K miles before replacing it. (it was slipping pretty bad towards the end)

To test the clutch of a car you may buy, put it in a high gear and step on the gas. If the RPMs rise (rev up ) and the car doesnt move, clutch is toast.
Bad clutches seem to follow people. There are some Z owners who have gone through several clutches in only a year or two. Certain drivers seem to wear down clutches faster than others.
Test drive the car...you'll know if there is something wrong. If it drives fine then the clutch is prob fine. Treat it right and you'll be OK.
