Thumbs up Track Brake Pads

Hey guys,
I understand that the Track brake pads are made by Ferodo as per dwnshift. What I would like to know is the CF, wear, rotor friendliness, and temp range. It seems to me, from my own experience, that the stock brake pads are excellent (with the exception of dusting). This comes from my first HPDE course I took last week. I have a second one coming this weekend, 1/26/03.

I am asking these questions because I was considering replacing the stock pads but, as I understand from Nissan, they are already "perfomance" pads. I don't want to spend money for an aftermaket pad that performs as well as the stock pads but costs more. On the other hand, I don't want to run with stock brakes that are not made for HP
DE events and wear them out prematurely, causing me to spend money on frequent replacements.

I don't want to give the wrong impression in terms of my driving skills and events attended. I am a beginner. I plan to do HPDE's(started) and autox-that's it. My car is my daily driver (95% of time) with occasional weekend track/autox events to maintain my skills. My goal is to become as good of driver as I can and to learn to handle my car safely and skillfully at it's limits. Currently, I have no plans to race-yet.

So if anyone can give me info on the stock pads and, if needed, if I should change them and, if so, to what?

Thanks.

PS I have researched alot on this subject and I have come up with possible replacement (if needed): Porterfield R4s, Hawk HPs/HP+, Ferodo DS2500 (I plan to get these when and if they ever appear). Any other's I should consider and why? Recommendations appreciated.

PPS I have read that some guys have both street and race pads. However, at my skill level, I don't think this is necessary. I think a high perfomance street/light track is sufficient. Am I thinking straight here? Please let me know! Thanks again.

Give Endless CC-X a try. They blow anything else away for a street/track pad. MUCH better than Portersfield or Hawk pads.

I have the Hawk HP+ pads F and HPS pads rear. My stock pads were about a half millimeter off the wear tab at less than 5K miles. Hopefully I get a bit better longevity out of the Hawk Pads. With the Track model, it's so easy to change pads (pull 2 spring lock pins then pull the 2 pad retention pins then slide the old pads out and new ones in all in about 2 minutes per corner) that having some dedicated track pads might not be a bad idea, but I am too tired and lazy at the end of a track day to want to change them back. I'll tell you how the Hawk setup is after I go to Laguna Seca on Thursday.

dwnshift-

Does Performance Friction offer a fitment to the general public? Or are you using a custom set?

Is this a race only pad?

Thanks,

JD

Def a track day only pad....they are pretty noisy around the paddock. My experiences within the last two years in GT/sedan racing, nothing comes close to what PFC can do on the track.

That's good to know. I've never had the option to use them on my current track car.

If I get serious about track days for the Z, I will check them out.

I just ordered the Panther +s from Carbotech. I will have them in for some days at VIR in a couple of weeks. They are supposed to be a good balance of performance and wear. They are described as not being harsh on rotors and have some moderate brake dust. They have a good website and the guy I talked to yesterday there was very helpful and informative. Again, I haven't used them yet, but everything they were saying made sense for my application of mostly street with some track/autox events.

Wish I could join you at VIR... I registered, but have since encountered a tight financial situation so it's out of my budget for the time being. *sigh*

That's a shame Hedonist. We'll have 4 350Zs there. I thought you were going to make it 5. Maybe next time! Do you have any last minute suggestions about brakes, tire pressure, VDC, gas usage, etc. for us first timers?

Robert, they shipped yesterday. You'll likely get them today since you're in NC.

For anyone who's interested, descriptions of our Panther track compounds can be found here.

If you have any questions, feel free to give me a call at the number in my signature.

See (some of you) at VIR next month! I'll be in a red SE-R. I might even be instructing you

Later,
Matt
