Default Transmission/Clutch Replacement (Warranty)

I am getting a new transmission under warranty. The gear box grinds when I go up or down into fifth. I have a 03 with 46K miles. I suspect I should replace the clutch assembly when the transmission is replaced. Does anyone have recommendations for replacement parts, what parts should I replace and a ballpark cost?

If you're getting your tranny replaced under warranty, they should
also be replacing your clutch for free.
That's what they did for me.

as far as I know clutch is not covered under warranty.

it would be a good idea to install a new clutch while replacing the trans since it'll be one job. I recommend JWT clutch.

A buddy of mine blew his 2nd tranny and when he got it replaced, they put him in a new clutch as well. They also did that for the 1st tranny that went out! So, they should replace your clutch when they replace the tranny.

When my friend's 2nd trany went out, we were going to the dragstrip running about 60-70 on the interstate when the shifter would not shift out of 5th. He went to drop it into 4th and it would not come out of gear. The shifter itself came out of 5th, but the linkage or something else would not allow it to come out of 5th. When we got to the offramp at the exit where the dragstrip was, he had to stop at a stop sign and start moving again from 5th!! That made the most horrific burnt clutch smell I have ever smelled. Even for the 2 hours we had to wait for a tow truck, we could smell the clutch. I think that the dealer knew how bad he had burned his clutch, they had to replace it. His fried clutch was a direct result of the tranny going out, so that may have been why he got his replaced.

Default Fly Wheel

Nissan is replacing the clutch and transmission. I am going to replace the fly-wheel. I am trying to decide between the Nismo ($480) or JWT ($?). While it doesn't appear to increase horsepower, reviews indicate it will improve throttle response and perhaps torque. The downside is additional noise from the gear box. Btw, I could also replace the clutch cable with steel braid for about $50. This sound like more of a feel good mod. rather than necessary.

Anyone's suggestions or experience would be appreciated.

some yes, but don't count your chickens yet. there are many 03/04 Z owners running into grinding (syncho) problems as 40k/50k miles. there are also way too many inccidents of trans problems and replacements for this to be only a driver issue.

I had mine replaced at like 58k miles, talk about cutting it close. It would grind going into 5th. The replaced alot of things, whole new tranny, with new braces, boots and all those goodies, plus a new clutch and they flushed out all the clutch fluid for me. Car runs like a champ now... hopefully I'm safe cause Im over the warranty now.

I understood the OEM clutch/transmission parts are compatible with the JWT fly wheel. What are you referencing regarding Nismo parts?

i have a 2003 performance ed ... about 4 months into it i had to get a new tranny.. it sounded like the ballbearing was out when i release the clutch it sounded like some one was shaking a can full of bolts in it... they gave me a new clutch and flywheel with it... 3 months later ..aka today my car is in the dealership for the same problem... ya i drive it hard.. but ive driven all my cars hard and this is the only one that has gone out on me so fast !

solution..... swap for a supra tranny !

They gave me the run around... The guy they got to test it drove like a ****ing grandma, grinded once then completely ignored it and drove even slower. I insisted that he has to drive the car harder... He called over one of the mechanics (who also owns a Z), and he drove it normally (read: fast). It grinded like hell and he told my service manager to replace it. If I were you I would just dog the **** out of the tranny so they have no reason to dick around with you, make sure it grinds nice and loud.
