I'd say those pics are inconclusive; need close-up shots. Besides, if I'm not mistaken, it's the INSIDE of the hole, where the alignment channel is that's taking damage, right? Wish Havok would get the pics up of his damaged pulley...

If you look at the black pulley picture, it looks like a solid piece of steel in the center. Isn't that the inside portion of the pulley, the part that sticks out? So what i gather from all this is that once the crank gear area wears out and starts to wobble, it starts rubbing into the crank seal and will cause it to fail. Well, i ordered my pulley through e-bay, so it's taking forever. Once i get it, i'll post closeup pics.

Actually the black one looks like it has a steel sleeve while the red one does not. Confusing.

No. The inside of the hole is where the pulley slides onto the crank w/ the alignment key. It's the outer portion that the seal rides on.

Default pics of UR pulley

okay, this pulley was an ebay special UR pulley, it looks legit though. The center outside part does look like it's sleeved, but then when you look at the other side you don't see anywhere it's attached. The key groove looks like the normal aluminum, it's the outer portion that looks like it has a sleeve, because of the line. You will see in the pics what i'm talking about.

front shot, you don't see anything different from a kjr/cnr
http://www.mindspring.com/~islandsno...%20(Large).JPG

side shot, you can almost see the line
http://www.mindspring.com/~islandsno...%20(Large).JPG

another side shot
http://www.mindspring.com/~islandsno...%20(Large).JPG

this one you can see the line, but i'm not 100% positive it's a sleeve.

Actually, from the last picture it looks like the end is chamfered a little bit. The slight angle makes the light reflect off it differently and that's why it looks different from the side shots.

okay, i was looking at the pulley a little closer. The part that is beveled is the sleeve everyone is talking about, that's why it does look like brushed stainless. I thought maybe the key area was reinforced somehow, but it's not, it's pretty much all aluminum except for maybe this 1 mm thick sleeve i guess where the crank seal sits. Not really sure how this makes this pulley stronger then the others though.

It doesn't make the pulley structurally stronger but, it does make for a harder wear surface so that the rubber oil seal does not wear a groove in the softer aluminum. The groove seems to be where everone is having the leaking issue.

Confirm the presence of the sleeve with a magnet. The pulley is AL, so if the sleeve is steel...

Is it a cap or a capped insert that goes down through the key hole?

I wonder how it is mated to the AL pulley?

it's a steel sleeve, confirmed via magnet. It's exactly what teh215 said, it's there to prevent wear from the bearing riding on it. Here is a couple of more pictures with where the sleeve is marked.

Gotcha. Thanks for the detailed pics. Well, if my CNR starts to show signs of going, I'll just have to replace the seal and pick up a UR pulley to replace it. It's doing just fine, presently, though.

Havok, you ever gonna get pics of your damaged pulley up?

No problem, just read the install instructions on the UR, it says the 1mm sleeve is pressed on, so that the crank seal rides on sleeve and seals the crankcase. Anyways, my CNR is not showing any adverse signs either except for the squeeking. Might try to install the UR this weekend and see if i can feel the difference.

here's a pic of my cnr after only a few hundred miles. don't know if this is the problem everyone's talking about? definite wear on the outside, see the rings grooved into outside, the key was fine, since they did torque mine correctly on install.

Rep,

the squeal was because my belts were loose. No squeal yet with the new gates belts and the UR pulley. The gates belts are shorter as the UR pulley is an underdrive pulley. Below are the prices and numbers for the belts you need, these are gates belts. I bought them from www.rockauto.com. The pulley was 148.00 from ebay, the vendor was city-speed, but the weird thing is i think they order the pulley when the next one is purchased, so it took me almost a month to get it.

GATES K060445 Accessory Drive Belt $ 13.85 $ 0.00 1 $ 13.85
GATES K040353 Accessory Drive Belt $ 7.66 $ 0.00 1 $ 7.66
Shipping $ 7.01
Order Total $ 28.52
