Question about aggressive cams for NA?
What is the best aggressive cam setup for NA that doesn't effect to driveability TOO much and can be tuned with the Unichip? Is a valve kit necessary? Z1, care to chime in?

Of the cams I have been able to find, tomei has the most agressive duration and lift grind. If you want more than that, try to find someone that can grind cams and find out what kind of specs they have available. Also I understand that cosworth has a new set of cams available, although I don't know any specs. good luck.

Nismo Spec2 cams definitely have the most aggressive duration and the lift.. unless you go for custom grinds...

NISMO Spec 2's, TOMEI 268's or JWT's TRACK Cam...
Would all be a good choice and fine on the street with the tuning side taken care of.... We have not seen a set yet that has affected drivability TOO much....LOL..... They should all be fine tuned correctly...

So everyone of these cams listed can be tuned in with the Unichip? No standalone necessary? Would the idle need to be adjusted? What would be the benefit to adding a valve kit? any? Thanks for the replies!

NISMO's need the VTC pullies...not sure if a UNICHIP can control that though.
Tomei do not need them, though I'll be using them anyway (UTEC does not currently support them, but one day, might, so I figure its better to have them and not need them than to take it all apart again!)
We also can offer a set from a major Japanese manufacturer (272 with 11.5 mm lift), though they have asked that we not officially advertise them, as they are trying to acquire an adequate supply of blanks first from Nissan.
That being said, I'll be using Tomei 268's on my car (stock bottom end, plan to rev the car to 7200-7400 (my current redline); Kwame will be running the NISMO Spec 2's, though he plans to build a motor to go with them to support the revs that those cams want.
As far as valves, no practical advantage to running a larger than stock valve on an NA Z without dramatically increasing displacement. Going to a lighter valve/spring/retainer is a nice addition, though not necessary - really depends what your wallet will absorb and what your ultimate goals are. On my car, we're using NISMO springs, and stock everything else. Kwame's car will have the Supertech springs/retainers, and stock valves.
What makes the cams truly sign is the time spent on the headwork and plenums (both upper and lower), and matching them to the right header.

My understanding is the Cosworth is coming out with a few different sets of NA cams for the Z. I think I might want to hang tight and see what they come up with. Z1, If I don't wait for the Cosworths are you saying with my current setup (see sig) that the Tomei 268's would be my best option? You need different springs for those cams don't you? Would I have to raise the idle to 900-1000?

but to take advantage of those figures, you need a built bottom end. No point having a cam with all that duration and only being able to spin the motor to at or near stock redline
If you are not building a motor, I'd say run the Tomei's - they will put you in the sweet spot of where a stock bottom end can take. If you plan to build a bottom end to go with the new heads, then you may want to look into the NISMO's

Im guessing your best bet for a 6600-7100 redline is to go with JWTs. they make excellent power under the curve and make peak power at around 6500.
In my opinion its not worth the extra $/hassle to get the tomeis over the JWTs.
I love all these people giving advice about cams when they know nothing about cams for the 350Z. Anything more agresive than JWT or Tomei 268 is a BIG waste of money if you arent going to build the motor to redline higher.

the JWT is a very mild cam, far less peak power than the 268. The greater lift of the Tomei also can permit for a broader power curve as well, of course, subject to the right header selection and the right tuning. They are the best overal cam, IMHO, for a stock bottom end car with a higher than stock redline, and that is the very reason I have them for my own car.
