nismo ecu??
I need some help in making a decision. Im planning on adding a turbo kit...eventually...and wanted to know if when i did it would be compatible with a reprogrammed ecu. What i need to know is if i can buy the nismo/jim wolf ecu when its released and then be able to use that same ecu when i turbo my car? I really dont want to waste the 600+ its gonna cost me. Thx for any info you can share.
This is a good question - my thought is you'd probably have to get another ECU specifically set up for the particular FI applications.
I could be wrong but that's my guess
I think an ECU is a great idea if it release 30-40hp for $500. I would spend $500 once and then sell it for $300 if and when I got the FI route.
ECU is going to be worth it from what I hear. If you've got other bolt ons (exhaust, Intake, etc) you'll be able to really release these bolts' on potential!

does anyone know which companies are making an us spec ecu for the Z? How much are they, when are they goin to come out, and is there a link? Thanks in advance as some of you can tell im really eager for an ecu to come out....
If you are going to go FI do not buy a upgraded ECU for your NA. FI can be done 2 differnt ways. The FI kit could run off the stcok ECU with just extra injectors and controller for the kit or the kit could come with a reprogrammed ECU. It all deppends on the who makes the kit. I woudl stay away from NA mods if you plan on going FI.
thanks,
Greg
thanks,

Ive been told by my friend at nissan that jim wolf is working with nismo to make the nismo ecu upgrade. I dont know exactly whne it will be released but i do know that my dealer will be stocking nismo parts in march. Price will definitely be less than a thousand or you shouldnt bother, i would think about $750 installed.
I thought the ECU for this car was programmable. Why would you need a whole ECU when you just need to adjust the EPROM that would be located inside. Am I totally wrong? Someone may charge 600$ for a new ECU but you might just be getting the stock one with new programming. I could also not know what I am talking about.

I would think the NA ECU (who ever makes it) would be incompatable with a turbo application. One of the ways to get more HP our of an NA motor is to add timing advance at higher RPMs. For turbo apps, the timing is retarded at higher rpms to help prevent detonation at higher boost levels. The extra boost more than makes up for the timing.
Since none are out, we can only guess at how the parameters will be tweeked. I would guess that if you tried an NA ECU in a turbo app, you would have unmanagable detonation problems due to timing issues alone.
If you want to put in an NA ECU till your ready to go FI, you could always sell the NA ECU when you upgrade to FI. You won't get all your money back, but it won't be a total loss either. Also, if its JWT, his policy has always been that you pay in full for the first ECU, but subsequent upgrades are $100. I don't know if he will continue this, but its worth considering.

ECU when it comes out. will always be changeable for any big FI or nos project you can think of.
its just the matter of adjusting key values... again.. timing advance or retard.. A/F...rev limit.. etc.
as far as getting 30-40 hp from just an ECU. thats insane. UNLESS you are boosted.. on an NA car, 15hp overall would be great, but expect something a little less.. like 6 hp throughout the rpm range but perhaps a peak 15hp at a certain rpm..
if nissan's ecu is set anything up like previous nissan ecus, you can only alter the A/F ratio after 3k .. why? because nissan sets up a closed loop system in order to have the engine warm up from a cold start.... *you can check this when you first start up your car, you will see the rpms around 1500, and when the car warms up, the RPMs will drop to regular idle*..
hopefully. we can get a nice power gain from 3->5500 rpms.. raising the rev limiter on a NA wont necessarily help out as much since the car's power curve is already trailling off at ~6400rpm..
