Does anyone know what causes this oil consumption? (improper break-in?)

Anyways, I've had my 06 since February, but hardly drive it.
I had the oil changed at 1,500 miles since it took me about 6 months to reach that, now I am at 2,500 miles so I can't really tell yet.
Next time I'll know to check and see if it's burning oil.

Its usually because the pistons rings havent seated properly, but there can be many reasons. Older cars usually start to wear out the vavle stem seals and start burning oil that way. Untill nissan finds a fix, I dont think anyone knows why the VQ is consuming oil.

Good info. I've had my Z for three weeks now, and I will be monitoring this.

One question: Rev-ups refer to the manual trans Z's? I know they have 300HP/260lb-ft vs. 287/274 for the auto, and have the REV shift feature. Is that what is meant by rev-up engine?

I've had my '06 for 3 months and now have 10,500 mi on it. I noticed it low after about the 1st 2000 miles and now am paying attention to it. It seems to be down about .5 qt. every 1000 miles(1 qt/2000mi). I was going to switch to synthetic, but will wait now. I'm trying to figure any correlation with the amount of times I go past 4000 rpm before shifting. It is not leaking out and I'm not getting any blackening from the tail pipe. So far I haven't read about any automatics having this problem so that is a start for deciphering what the cause is.

And no, it didn't give me any confidence in the service department when they said they hadn't heard of this potential problem. If your business was servicing Zs, wouldn't you be checking this site for complaints and remedies?

Checked mine this past weekend and it barely registered on the dipstick. It did not even make it past the first curve on the stick. This was just over 3000 miles since my previous.

I just want Nissan to start fixing the problem instead of insisting there's not one.

"some" I can understand, but "some" should not even be noticable. I had a 96 Maxima before this and beat the hell out of it and it never once had any noticeable oil consumption.

I broke in my car gently and then changed the oil at 1200 miles. Shortly thereafter i noticed some blackening of the exhaust pipes and since then i've burned about a quart of oil. I have 4000 miles on the car and i definately drive it hard sometimes, though i spend a lot of time on the highway as well. At this rate it doesn't bother me too much, but if it starts to burn any more than this, i may start complaining to nissan.

Got to love the 3 strike rule.

I don't change oil I replace engines. For such a fun car it is crazy to have these issues.
Ever heard of the lemon law. Sounds like they owe you a new car! One reason i have vowed to never own a Vette.

My consumption has really increased. I took a trip to monterey and back, put about 700 miles, and it consumed 1/2 quart. Im going to make an appointment tommarow. Man it pisses me off, a $30K car thats burning oil at 12k miles. Amazing!!

Are these numbers still reflective of the extent of the problem or has it gotten worse with time?

I have a 06 350z Enthu 6MT. I bought mine brand new from Performance Nissan. I first noticed the oil consumption when I took it to my local dealership for the 3 month service. About a week before that, at about 500 miles, I took it to my mechanic for an oil change w/ Royal Purple. The dealership said I was short 1/2 to 1qt. I was obviously surprise to hear that, but not alarmed since I never heard of oil consumption before. I keep driving like nothing was wrong. Than I started hearing about other 06 owners w/ the same problem & how this can be a major issue w/ the engine. I now have 5k miles on it & it consumes oil like crazy. I am planning a trip to Perf Nissan for a oil consumption test. PS: This is my first quote. I just joined the club today. This site is great!

No problems so far. 2006 ZR with 4400 miles. I switched to Mobile 1 synthetic at 3750 miles. Free oil changes for life from my dealer (I pay the difference for synthetic).
