Default OK to use 80W90 in Transmission?

Is it okay to have 80W90 in my trans instead of the 75W90 I have read should be put in? I just got my trans fluid changed on my '03 6MT and the shop put in 80W90 according to my receipt.

I have noticed that it's harder to get into first and shifts a bit rough into 2nd when cold. Is this normal or should I have a different fluid in there? Thanks

Nissan designated 75-85W for a reason. The higher viscocity of the 80-90W will have an effect on the overall operation of your 6 speed. One method that Redline oil recommends is to mix their MTL and MT-90 tranny oils to gain the recommended 75-85W mix.

Make sure the fluid going in your trans. is GL-4 not GL-5 ... I wouldn't worry about slight variations in viscosity

What about something like the Royal Purple Max Gear that states safe for both GL-4 and GL-5?

Curious if ok to use for the tranny

If they say safe for GL-4, I guess I'd trust them

update: took it back to the place I got it changed at and they took my car out with me and felt the problem I was having. They put the car up and changed over to mobil-1 75W90 and it shifts perfect now. They were really nice about it and were falling all over themselves to help me. Needless to say, I'm happy

Yeah most likely is, just wanted to feel more comfortable about it
