I took the car in yesterday afternoon for the slight grind into 3rd, and bad grind into 5th over 4K RPMs. The service writer comes out on the drive with me and I show him the grind into 5th, he says yea thats a problem (no $#@t Capt. Obvious). So now 15 minutes ago I get a call to authorize the removal of my transmission. He says before you say yes I have to let you know that if the problem you are aving isn't covered under warranty, its going to cost $600. So as I heard that nice lump of cash being said my brain started going into overdrive into what else could cause the grind. I dont think it can be my clutch for a few reasons. 1. My car would start to get boggy and not want to accelerate. When my friends clutch was going out, it would be a struggle to get his car to leave stoplights, and get over 35mph. 2. I dont think my car would even be capable of running a 14.6 1/4 mi if my clutch was that messed up 3. I think it would grind all of my gears not just 5th over 4K RPM. I know im at 50K, but I tihnk my clutch has a little more life in her. I did however purchase a Spec stage 2+ clutch and JWT flywheel on monday. So if it is the clutch I'm ready to go, but I dont think that 600 for a cltuch job would be a grand thing either. What do you guys think, don't worry about it? Its probably the 5th gear synchro and thats under warranty? or do you sugest I start finding a nice doctor to buy my kidneys? Sorry for the long post, I'm just not made of money and waking up to a 600 possible bill this morning was not a grand way to start a day off.
Take it to a transmission shop have them drive your vehicle and have them confirm whether or not if its your clutch or your synchros most possibly if it only grinds in third at over 4000rpm its your synchros i had the exact same problem the dealership just tried to pull that same sh*t on me they try to make you second guess yourself. just take your car to a differerant nissan dealership i went to another nissan and showed them the problem within the hour they called me back and told me they ordered a new cd009 tranny and a new clutch no hassles
i see you live in vegas also take it to united nissan on mojave and sahara they took care of me the nissan over on sahara and decatur sucks!!!!

Even if you have the clutch replaced etc, they will issue the statement. In reality, is a common statement : if we determine it is not covered, you have to pay for it. In a way is a standard dissclaimer.
Issue : if you switch the OEM clutch to an aftermarket, even if the tranny has an issue, they will claim it is not covered. So be carefull with that also.

Some of these guys will "try" to screw you no matter what.
Do like DavidV suggested and ask for them to give you the old clutch and have them prove that it was cause of the problem.
In fact, just have them replace the clutch only. If the problem is still there, they just paid for your new clutch and will have to replace the transmission as well.
The transmission in these cars break down more often than they should.

Well I called this morning and he said that the only problem was that the clutch was totally worn out. I bought a clutch and flywheel off of a member here and it should be here tomorrow or monday. Bad thing is, since the clutch isnt under warranty I have to pay that $600 charge. So when I go down there to pay this I am going to go in and ask to speak to the service manager. I want to know how it can cost 600 to drop my tranny and now put a clutch and flywheel on. I could have went to a clutch shop and had the $#@t replaced for way cheaper and they wanna take it to me. When I go to the manager I'm going to bring a tube of KY and before I leave drop it on his desk and tell him its for the next guy so that he doesnt get raped as hard as they did me.
Don't pay them one red F'in cent. Your clutch and by proxy your driving habits are not responsible. Almost every m/t owner on this forum has problems w/5th and 3rd, some have gotten up to 4 trannys replaced under warranty. Nissan's powertrain warranty is 5yrs/60,000mi, as I'm sure you know, and that covers all internal trans parts. These guys are trying to extort you. Your tranny will continue to grind w/the new parts and then they will tell you your entire powertrain warranty is voided b/c the parts you provided were not acceptable. This is more than likley a service advisor and tech teaming up to screw you. If others have had a much better experience at the same dealership they must have dealt w/different advisors. Don't pay them anything up front, talk to the service manager. I know for a fact that warranty covers flywheels, clutch assemblys, and throwout bearings. The only thing not covered is the clutch disc itself.
Sorry if I rambled, its been a long week and I'm about to pass out.

I'm not saying you should pay but anyway the Tranny job is 7 hours by Nissan book and Labor is prob atleast 80 per hour I would think so that totals 560 + Tax and Misc materials so thats 600 US Dollars.
Whats your miles on da Z bra? NM I saw 50K

Consider that every dealership is an independent business and is only required to do the things that Nissan agrees to pay for and your warranty is with Nissan not the dealer.
They can tell you to get lost and take your business some where else.
Generally dealers squeeze Nissan to cover too much as that is their major source of revenue.

I just wish that my dealer would have been receptive to replacing my transmission when I was still under warranty. They kept giving me the run around saying that nothing was wrong and that they've never heard of the problem before. Granted, this was back at the end of 2003 to summer of 04. I've had the 3rd gear grind for as long as I can remember. I've gotten used to it, but it's starting to get worse. My probablem is that i have over 102,000 miles on the car. Ugh, so no chance for me to get it replaced. Does anyone know what a replacement 009 transmission would cost? As time goes on, I can't see this transmission lasting too much longer. Thanks and I hope everything works out for you.

OK, so I finally got my car back and got to drive it
. The JWT flywheel and spec 2+ clutch feel great. Only thing I think that may be wrong is that when I push down the clutch to shift gears it feels like it doesnt release all of the way. It feels like it is still making a slight contact. Maybe this is just a sound or feel due to the lightened flywheel? Or do I need a pedal adjustment? They also did not do a clutch flush bleed. How do you do a clutch job and not bleed and flush the system?
Also the car when downshifted such as around a corner at low RPMs gets the cement truck noise but I heard that was normal. I thought it was only when stopped you get the chatter, so when I was going around and heard it I was like holy $hit! LOL

have over 102,000 miles on the car
Congrads to you and the engineers you have exceeded the 100,000 mile minimum design and LEGAL life.
Now the fun begins.
dealer would have been receptive
Any business is receptive if you are a personal friend. relative, previously a big spender profitwise, or know how to GAME the system, grease the wheels of industry so to speak.
