Yet another Free Ram/Cold air wild idea
I am seriusoly considering this.
I have the Injen CAI but I am adding a restrictive grille (well more restrictive than stock since the air cone has been moved.)
I like the look of the grill though (silver race style) and think the stock black grill is bland and detracts from the car. The silver really changes the whole front end (pics Friday!)
Anyways, here is my idea.
Cut a round hole in the shroud under the front bumper (leave all bolts on) run a rubber hose up to just in front of the Injen Air Filter cone.
I even have the perfect plastic hose. My stock part of my intake that has the bellow. It is perfect and has clamps etc already.
I know it may get loud but that is not my concern. I have about 1400 watts rms in stereo and when it's off my car screams anyway. I do not think aerodynamics would be as effected this way as it would be with my other idea of removing the Shroud complelety (some here were right it cause front drag.
Opinions? Snide remarks? Subbliminal hater thought?
I know I can get more air into this puppy and I know switching grills is gonna reduce air flow a little.
Anyone else been thinking of this?
The LS1 has a Free Ram Air Mod that takes 3 minutes, we need something like that!

I bet someone out there is desinging an after market cold ram kit already, probably already in R&D like Fast Toys did and charged 200 bucks!
Fast Toys Ram Air
I am not an Engineer obviously anyone else want to get in on some ideas for free mods while we wait for pully's and ECU's and headers? I'm not paying 1500.00 for headers just because my car is a Z, I will wait 2 years and pay 300 like the Honda's go for that produce 10RWHP! Till then my mind is a churnin!
My buddy is coming by Friday with a spring compressor and we are gonna add the Eibach Pro Kit ourselves (we are sort of Krazy Round Here', save me from cutting my car up with a saw

another idea:
use the car's exisiting aerodynamic design and put an air channel from the high pressure zone where the nose creates infront of the car, and port that air into the stock air box. you'll be getting a free ram air affect as well.
this section of the car is clearly noted from those ADVAN/GT-class Z pictures where there is that smaller rectangular box in the front of the bumper.
this can also be shown with the wind tunnel images of the Z from NISMO japan's website.. there the smoke splits up and down is a stagnation point of high pressure... open that up and you got free energy.
you can also cut a hole in the front bumper and insert a gradually sloped channel into the stock air box.. but that opening vent must be a gradual slope and not just a straight piece, due to the fact that air has to flow smoothly over the opening and into the hole.

I dont think it will work as you expect. any differences would be more like .001 rather than .1
your grill mesh is not likely to cause any problems with intake, cause plenty of air can still pass through, and your not getting any "ram air" as it is, so the speed and volume isnt really important. for ram air, you would need to do basicly what was above, hit it right through the bumper... anything else you just want it to draw air from a colder area, which the front will provide regaurdless of what covers it.

Just a minor observation, but the Injen is setup so that the air inlet is perpendicular to the air flow. You might want to see if you can get the air inlet to be parallel to air flow. I'm not sure how the Injen air filter is configured ( open-top design or closed?). But if the air inlet is parallel to air flow, a dome shaped filter (GREDDY, RACTIVE, HKS,etc...) or one with an open top (RSA, RACTIVE, JWT,K&N XSTREAM) would be more promising, IMHO.
Just ideas.

and came across this
Here is some of the work they do

And here is a link to the price sheet that shows a spot for the Z33 (350z) so it looks like they are working on one

Nice filter,
Links are good but clicking on the thumbnails for a closer view gives me a 404 error every time so I can't get a close look.
I am gonna go for my idea.
It's in my head I think it will help.
As for the aftermarket G-T grill not being less restrictive (air flow) than stock when using an Injen CAI we have to agree to disagree there.

I mean I still have it but I am using a CAI and the air filter sits right behind the front grill.
