Finally--the complete fix for B&M shifter rattle
The is the compete and total fix for B&M sport shfter rattle--making it absolutely the best 350Z and G35 coupe short shifter on the market:
1)Tear everything down to the shifter itself in the cup of the transmission housing.
2)Wrap electrical tape one and a half times around the black metal pivot housing of the shift that sits into the cup. Just pull the shifter up a bit and wrap the top of the housing with a little bit of the tape overlapping the top of the pivot housing. Then, lube the outside of the tape and guide down into the transmission cup. Should be snug but not binding at all.
3)Take the blue metal triangular piece that covers the top of the pivot housing and turn it over. You'll see a recessed "D"-shaped opening. Stick down some double-sided foam tape with the other side of the tape left covered by the vinyl interleaf. You need to trim the width of the tape down to about 6 mm. Make three pieces, each about 1 1/2 inches long to fit around the recessed flange of the "D". This eliminates metal-on-metal rattle that the rubber ring in the pivot housing doesn't get rid of. The foam tape should contact the TOP of the black pivot housing of the shifter assembly.
4)Put the blue metal plate and the brass shifter guide plate on and adjust properly. Be sure that the foam tape isn't too thick--so that the tang on the shifter shaft base still contacts the guide plate preventing accidental shifting into reverse. If this is close, pull up a bit on the shifter to compress the tape slightly. The tang should be just a 1/2mm away from the flat guide stop when in 5th and 6th gear.
5)Insulate the inside of the rubber triangle-shaped cover with some paper towel (for additional sound insulation).
6)Make a donut out of a shop towel wrapped with duct tape to encircle the shifter base on top of the rubber triangle and fitting under the large rubber boot (more sound insulation).
7)Tighten down the rubber boot, replace the felt insulator on top and then the thin leather boot and attached console assembly.
8)Apply red lock tight to the threads of the top of the shifter (be sure to throw away the chamfered spacer that was on the original setup). Screw down the shifter FULLY without damaging the linkage. You may have the hold the shaft with a channel locks. On my G35, this took 9 full turns.
You're now ready to enjoy the tightest, baddest, quietest short shifter on the market.
