Default What is a Surge Tank???

I was reading the article that everyone talks about when they talk about naturally aspirated 350z's. This link here: http://jdm-option.com/eng/feature/05_12/z33_v35.html. A few of these cars have a modified Surge Tank. Now what the hell is a surge tank and what does it do and lastly do I need one and if I do where can I get it.

Sorry for my ignorance I just dont know what a surge tank is!!!

I think it has something to do with fuel tanks / fuel cells, something about keeping the pump from going dry

I'm not too sure about the technical definition, someone else may chime in here

It keeps an amount fuel around the fuel pump so it always has fuel to pick up. For some reason the 350z fuel tank does not have baffels or a sump i think.

from the wording, im guessing its a smaller tank inline with the fuel pump thats always full so when you turn and theres no fuel at the pump, there will be fuel for the engine from the surge tank.

A surge tank may apply to many things. In the case of the link the OP provided, they are talking about the intake manifold plenum - which can also be considered a surge tank.

A surge tank can be applied to several things. Its pretty much a temporary holding cell for fluid/air. Its specifications will change depending on application of fluid vs. air, and operating conditions.

THANX guys!!! Sounds like these tuners made some sort of change to the intake such as adding a larger plenum or a spacer then. I was totally lost on what they were talking about.
