2006 oil consumption poll - please vote!
It seems as though the 2006 model 350Z has been plagued with an oil consumption issue. Based on what I am reading on the forums, one would think that 90% of 06's have this issue..but naturally the ones that don't have the issue will also not have a reason to post. I want to get a real count so please vote if you have 2006 350Z. Thanks

Here's what I think. Given the amount of 06' rev-ups produced, by far, the majority do not have this issue. The common denominator has yet to be determined by Nissan, and when they have figured it out, they will recall those production vehicles.
Since we don't know yet what is causing this problem, we can not presume to generalize all 06's into this category.
The real issue is that those who do have the problem are being met with resistance in solving their dilemma. This is due to three reasons that I can think of.
The first being that Nissan is yet unwilling to publicize the issue because they are coming off a decline in sales in 06' and doing a blanket recall of 06' vehicles would not be a prudent business decision on their part.
The second reason is that unfortunately many of us fall into that grey area of modding our cars. The dealer is then running interference in diagnosing the problem and in many cases is at a loss due to a lack of knowledge in this arena.
Thirdly, and in my opinion, most significant, many of us do not possess the skill set in getting things done. So we are being manipulated by the dealer/corporate mechanism to hang tight. As I have stated before regarding this problem, the squeaky wheel gets the grease. Unfortunately, we must "force" the issue, or simply stand by and wait.
Having said all of this, if you push the right buttons and push hard enough, you will get your specific problem resolved. To qualify, from the point of detection by the dealership to the point of engine replacement, it took me approx 10 days or so to receive my engine.
If everyone were able to resolve this quickly, this discussion would probably not be taking place.
Furthermore, your poll will be skued without a clear definition to what oil consumption is.

1) Yes, my '06 uses oil...a quart every 1000-1500 miles. And I consider that "an oil consumption problem". I now have almost 12K on it.
( I own, or have owned Mazdas and Toyotas several other Nissans and never added a quart between changes)
2) Its true that Nissan has not determined the root cause of the oil consumption problem. But there is certainly no evidence that it actually an engine problem. IMO, more likely an engine management problem, or some defect in the crankcase vent system.
3) Some owners have had engine replacements, and the new engines did NOT fix the problem.
4) Unless there are no other alternatives, I don't want a dealership shop replacing my engine. Especially if it isn't really the problem.
5) At the current rate ( it definitely has NOT gotten worse) that means I buy an "extra" 8-10 quarts a year. I can handle that.
Now, I'm a former engineer that spent a career designing, building, and maintaining industrial machinery. If I own something, I expect it to work right. But I figure I have another 50K miles, and over 4 more years, for Nissan to figure this out. If I still have the problem when I get to 50K, then I will demand that Nissan deal with it. In the meantime, I'll just wait and hope they find a simple solution.

To the person who created the poll: I just realized that you should make the poll for 2006 6mt only, not just 2006 cars. 2006 cars with the 5at dont come with the revup, and from what I have been reading, its only the revups with the problem. I think if you include only 06 6mts, you will get a lot more "Yes" votes.

I voted no, mine has only used 1/4 quart in 3700 miles it has been driven and I would consider that to be normal for an engine that is breaking in and for one that hig revving.

^Maybe it should have it's own forum.
Bill, I know this because it was so friggin low the engine was pinging. The dealer went to drain the oil and got about 1/2 Qt. Granted there's some more in the engine still, but I'd consider that bone dry.

yes so this is my great story.I got my wonderfull 06 z inthe end of 05 and right before my three thousand mark my car would start pinging so I didnt think it was and issue other than the fact that I thought that I synthetic should last longer than conventional oil . either way I was running castrol up until my last change when I switched to amzoiland so like clockwork right before the three thousand mark pinging and so I triedadding one more qt and 1400 miles later a spun bearing and an efed up crank and nissan decided to ef me over and beacause I did all my personal changes they wanted proof that I had changed my oil when I really did have a choice to but to do so because of the pinging and so they accused me of never changing my oil when I brought them a reciept of my last change that wasnt enough and so I had to purchase from someone and now after just got having put 1400 miles onit ive allready had to add two quarts to it and so ive had and still have an oil consuption problem and nissan efed me good so now I have an apartment payment (aka my car) and no warranty

OH CRAP! I didn't know about this issue, so I just went out and checked mine. I've had the car for a few days less than 1 month. I have already put 1500 miles on it and sure enough. Its at the bottom of the fill mark. DAMNIT! So, what's the deal? Is the dealer supposed to do anything about this? I have a 2006 6sd MT coupe.
But then again, when I bought the car, I can honestly say I didn't check the oil being it was a brand new car.
