Default Undercar Skid Plate

Just did an oil change and i decided to leave it off. Is this a bad idea? Do you really think anything will happen if i leave it off? I live in Tampa FL if thats any help (no snow, just rain).

Need to know ASAP
Thanks,
-Dan

i would put it back on. i know its a pita everytime you want to change your oil but it keeps a lot of shat out from underneath your car. I live in tampa florida also, and i wouldnt risk it (its on there for a reason). I know some of my friends have dirt/rock driveways and imagine the dust particals flying up underneath your car when you stop on dirt. Just a thought, good luck with your decision.

I would leave it on as well. It wouldn't be too hard for some debris to get up in bad areas.....it also has aerodynamic benefit

Gonna get your engine bay a bit dirtier....then add in the rain, engine bay will get a lot dirtier. Water splashing up on the pulleys won't be a positive - might lead to belt slippage. Not a big fan, either, of water splashing around on electrical connections, electrical items, etc. Should be safe, but that's just me.....

I agree with all above. Being FL rain you guys get there. I took mine off. But my car is more of a weekend warrior. I never take it out whenever there is a possible chance of rain. Even with it off since my first oil change, it stays pretty clean.

Wow! So why wouldn’t you just keep it on??? It is there to keep the engine clean as well as control the airflow.

It takes me 2 min to take it off ...

No real reason. I'm under my car couple times a week checking, adjusting sways, and inspecting my turbo for any signs of leaking. Making sure things are in check at all times. Just my choice and opinion he asked for. I didn't know I'd get called out on it, like it was a big deal.

Not only will your engine bay get dirty but you also lose some aerodynamic properties. By removing the skid plate the oncoming air doesn't have a consistant flow pattern.

Your engine will run cooler with the skid plate.

The plate helps aerodynamics in a way that helps draw air through the radiator and engine compartment and down beneath the car.

This is particularly important with the added heat of the turbos....

you could cut a small rectangle piece in it and use a metal flashing that diverst oil down the cut out to drain the oil so u dont have to take the splash out everytime.. I have some cut outs in mine for my BOV and near my oil filter

You don't want to lose zero-lift now, do you?

LOL! Is is that difficult to get it out of the way when changing oil that you removed it? I barely notice it. Get a powered ratchet set and the cover will be off in less than 2 minutes, if that.

i'm not sure about the new Z's but my under-skid plate has a rectangle cut out for changing the oil. Needless to say its not quite big enough and is challenge not to splash the oil all over it, but it is there. First time i made a mess, but since then things go pretty smooth. Just when the oil is draining and its getting to the last bit of it, the stream will downsize and run right into the plastic. A rag does the trick, but taking it off isnt that big of a deal. (and putting it back on)
