Default Function:TUNED AWD 350Z Complete!

AWD 350Z

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qXz1DnthW8s

Over the past 3 months we have taken our 350Z from a simple RWD sports car to an AWD Corner Carving, Non-weather caring Sports car with the unique ability to swap between RWD and AWD ON-THE-FLY.

Here is the original thread of the build.

https://my350z.com/forum/engine-and-drivetrain/246638-sneak-peak-funtion-tuned-wd-350z.html

As far as we are concerned this is the first in the country for this chassis and drivetrain.

We have taken the running gear from a G35X and with some fabrication and quite a bit of know how we've shoe horned it into the Z.

Driving Impressions

This car handles handles HANDLES! We can now take average off ramp at ~20MPH faster then in RWD mode. The steering is very confidence inspiring and actually seems much more controlable and stable. The car launches very well and we have found wet traction has increased 10 fold.

Power Impressions

This car started as an automatic and currently we are using the automatic drivetrain fromt he G35X. Up to 100MPH the Function:TUNED 350Z AWD keeps up with a RWD 350Z after that it tends to be a hair slower.

The Function:TUNED AWD Z obviously has the advantage at a stop light launch and just roasts any RWD Z.

Future Plans

Within the next few months we will be attempting to source a R34 Skyline Manual Transmission for installation.

Man that is really cool. I like to see this kind of pioneering being done. Any chance you guys can get some weight numbers?

And, is this something you guys get market into an affordable option for Z owner's to take? I would do this in a heart beat over a TT setup.

Grats on the great build guys!

dave, great meeting you when you were down at forged... i hope you enjoyed the grub at the Marietta Diner... *haha*

EXCELLENT work on the AWD... i didn't actually expect you to have it ready so soon! guess now you need an AWD dyno so soon after the new purchase??

again, great job... tho, i have to point out that i think the Z left the line before the third horn blow! *lol*

Thanks! We haven't had a chance to take it to the local trash dump to weigh. We are guestimating 300 to 500 lbs. Its alot bet well worth it for all the added handling with little affect on quickness.

Affordable is relative. We are estimating $8K to $14K depending on options and parts sources. So its in the TT range but we really want to get the manual trans sorted. That will make the car even more of a hoot to drive.

Or the G wasn't prepared for the AWD quickness...lol j/k he did but it still shows the idea behind the AWD.

really nice and well done!

but man, 300-500 lbs almost negates the traction advantage. I mean, even from a launch AWD usually jumps ahead, but with 300-500 lbs extra and additional drivetrain losses, that's a harder sell for me at least. And especially if both setups had racing tires anyway. But yeah, for all these 600+whp Z/G's we've been seeing lately, AWD is the way to go for people on the street.

Wish the AWD vs RWD launch was a little more scientific - a G35 is heavier than a Z, I don't know if any of us happen to know the power specs between those two cars or what tires they were on. Also as everyone pointed out, the Z left early

looks like a ton of fun though, and that's especially awesome you can switch back and forth between AWD and RWD at any time.

Good job!

G was a REVup vs Non-Rev Up...lol...even more non-scientific.

Also power wise what was done to the AWD car? Just wondering what the limits of that power train are.
