Hello,

I see. You feel it for sure, and most of the time hear it. You're welcome, btw.

do you have to be the original owner to qualify for a new trans from the dealership? What if you dont know what dealership the car came from, will any nissan dealership do it. And how can you check if your car still has warranty?

You dont have to be the first owner. I bought my 05 Z 2 weeks ago and it had 33K miles. My fourth gear does a whining noise when you release the throttle. Got it checked and nissan is going to replace it with a brand new one. I just hafta tell them to get me the part#32010-CD009.

Mine has picked up this grinding into thrd in the past month and it is very obvious and easy to duplicate. I'm going to bring it to them this weekend so they can tell me they're giving me a new one!

My 03 started to grind in 3rd last week. I kept trying to tell myself it was something else but it progressively got worse. It continues to happen for the first 4 or so shifts on a cold start. After it's warm, the problem fades away.

Last night I dropped it off at Stateline Nissan so I could recreate a cold start the next morning. I had a tech ride with me this AM and he heard the grind several times including when he drove as well. He said the syncros were off and that I would likely need a new tranny.

Update: I got a call back from a rep trying to sell me the 30k maintenance on top of the grind issue. I already had this done at another shop (trans fluid flush, oil) but have not told them yet. I want to see if they can even tell anything was done.

The rep said she was talking with Nissan about a new tranny, clutch box, and syncros. She said if Nissan detects any neglect or abuse they would not approve the warranty work. I KNOW Nissan KNOWS about the tranny grind issue. I don't have any previous maintenance logs, except the one I did at 30k. Is there any major maintenance to do before 30k? I know the previous owner did all the oil changes and such.

I hope to hear from them in the next few hours. I saw a silver twin turbo in the garage. Quite a sweet ride if it belongs to anyone here. The tech said it was pushing 600 hp.

I hope to God they don't tell me they won't honor my warranty. I might kill them if they try to pull some crap on me. I'm trying to sell this thing and this isn't helping!

I just received wonderful news (if you can call a clear design flaw fix good news). Nina Lobner, service advisor for State Line Nissan (816.942.4007) called and said she placed an order for a new tranny, syncros, and gearbox. I am trilled because her previous call sounded like Nissan was pushing back due to the car's lack of dealership history. [I bought the car privately from the senior tech at the Acura dealership two buildings down, so he did all the work himself at his shop's garage.]

Good luck to the rest of you '03s. Thank you for all the suggestions. I highly recommend leaving the car overnight and then ridding with a tech on a cold start the next morning. If I were to have driven to the shop it would have never gridded for him. He knew instantly what was wrong.

I'll need to update my signature now

Just got the car back. Running perfect but more importantly, shifting like the champ she is.

Took mine in on Friday and they had a new tranny on order before they called to tell me. I'm pumped! Should be in this week!

You can call your local Nissan dealership and have them run your VIN and see.

Sometime I grind going from 6th to 5th, but its rare and I hardly get into 6th anyway so I'm not that worried about it.

Default still replaced out of warranty

At 65,000 miles the dealer replaced my tranny out of warranty, no cost, got lightweight flywheel put in while it was being put in anyway, also Nissan included a new clutch. I guess goodwill is available if its the dealer you bought the car at originally and they also performed ALL the maintance at their shop they can make an exception.

Pretty sad a car with 90% freeway miles had this happen, I'll have to check the part number and make sure its the new upgraded unit.

UPDATE: Yep #32010-CD009 part number, if the dealer tries to sell you their 60,000 service and you are having this problem, take the over priced service and they will be more inclined to give you a new tranny if yours is grinding.
