Base needs LSD
I finally picked up my first Z. That said, it is the base model so it requires some upgrades! The first thing I plan is getting an LSD. My question is which one should I get (or the pros and cons of the popular ones) and besides the actual LSD, what else will I need to buy? Thanks!

You need to search and make some decisions. Do you want the stock VLSD, Do you want a viscous LSD, do you want a clutch type LSD? What is your budget, are you going to be tracking the Z. These are all questions you need to answer before you buy. In my opinion, I would just do a pumpkin swap.
There is no reason to be ashamed owning a base model so the is not necessary. Good luck

The stock LSD sucks, if you are going to spend the money and effort might was well spend, although more, and do it right ia m looking at doing the Quaife, from what I have seen and heard it is the most streetable and civilized.

Thanks for all the input. As of right now, the Z is my daily driver, and probably will be for sometime. (I live 1/2 mile from work!) That said, i do have big plans for the Z. So, I believe I will probably just get an aftermarket diff. Now realize, I am a noob here so I have no idea what a pumpkin swap is or axel stubs. Also, can someone give me a cliff notes version of the difference between the viscous and the carbon LSD's? Thanks!
P.S. Not ashamed of the Base, Ijust got shammed into it. Long story but I was told I was buying the Enthusiast, thats why the . oh well, learn from mistakes!

don't even bother getting a VLSD...
I have a Nismo and love it... it is loud if you are a chick. a friend has a Quaife on his G35c and it is completely transparent and hooks wonderfully. if you want a more refined product, look at the quaife.
if you want to drift or have a more agressive action, go for a clutch type (Cusco, Nismo, Kaaz, etc)

Thanks again! I would say right now, my biggest concern is going to be grip in the rain since this is going to be my daily driver. But in the future I may need something that can handle a little track time. What about the cusco? Also, I went to the dealer today just out of curiousity and they said the left and right stub axels would run about $1400 Does that sound about right? Anyone who has a base and did this upgrade, do you have part numbers for the stubs? Thanks again

Lindelium, I just did basically the same thing you are trying to do about a month ago. I have the base and wanted to get more traction on wet surfaces and around sharp turns. The best thing to do is do the whole pumpkin swap out of the other model Z's. Jim at turbo toys will hook you up with one or you can try a local junkyard. Since you have an open diff, you would need to buy the axle stubs in order to put in just the internal VLSD component in your base open diff. Jim also has those, and $1400 is a little steep, try $150. More then likely you were pricing the axles that go from the pumpkin to the wheels. If you decide to go with a clutch type LSD, such as the nismo, you can just drop it into your open differential with nothing else required, however, this is not easy to do as you have to open up the pumpkin. This may require you to have a shop do it, or you can mail it to a sponsor on this board and they will do it costing a couple hundred dollars. In my opinion, just a VLSD pumpkin swap is very easy and cheap and you can do it yourself, just bolting things up. Hope this helps, let me know if you have any questions.
