Default Fan wiring

OK, I got the FAL fan's in "Istan's" car working. They only have one speed and one power and ground wire each (unlike the factiory fans) so this required a bit of custom wiring. The fans now come on when the A/C is on and/or when the car gets hot. When the car cools off and when the A/C is off, the fans turn off. What I did was this:

On aftermarket fan 1, the power wire should be connected to the blue wire on connector 1 and the red/white wire on connector 2. The ground wire from this fan should be connected to the black wire and the yellow/red wire on connector 2.

On aftermarket fan 2, the power wire should be connected to the black/yellow wire on connector 1 and the white wire on connector 2. The ground wire from this fan should be connected to the black wire and the yellow wire on connector 1.

Here's a preliminary (free hand) wiring diagram. I'll make a neater one when time allows:

Did you think about having only one of the two fans come on in "low" mode (relay 1) and tie the other fan to relay 2/3 so it only comes on for the "high" mode?

Or are they both pretty quiet anyway...

Stan, on the aftermarket fans, you have the R's and B's reversed. Also, on Fan Connector Two, pin 2 should be RW.

Terrific..thanks for doing this for everyone. I would have done it, but I can never find the time to sit down....let alone to a wiring diagram....great work!

Considering the vortech on the front of my car, it's hard to hear the fans. We can hear them engage when hood is up and we're sitting in front of the car listening for it.

The most important part is, the fans are turning on when they are suppose to.
Low or High temps, fans are on.
AC on (regardless of temps), fans are on.
AC off, below low temps, fans are off.

They are about as loud as a twin turbonator setup.

We were reviewing the wiring diagram. I am concerned that powering a 15-20amp fan with the stock wiring/power system might not be sufficient. We have been using relays in the past. Does anyone know the amperage rating of the OEM fan?

I will call my Nissan Mech later today and see if he knows. The fans seem to be working fine still, and in this heat, it's turning on quite frequently.

How soon should I expect to see it not work?

It might never fail. It's more of a safety precaution, if the wire gauge isnt sufficient, the the wire can eventually heat up, and melt, and then short something out. The fuse will probably blow first.

It sounds like the relay is strong enough, since it is turning the fan off and on without an issue. But if its marginal, it might just be a matter of time.

If the OEM fan draws 15-17amps each, then we should be perfectly fine. The reason I am asking, becuase we can save all of our customers about $100 in relays and wiring if we can use the stock wiring/relay.

The OEM fusible links under the hood for the stock fans are 40 amps. If the FAL fans draw 15-17A, I'd guess the OEM fans draw more power. I think the general rule of thumb for fuses is double the average draw. Using that rule, I'd guess the stock fans draw around 20A.

Hi guys,

Bringing this thread back from the dead. I'm in the middle of my install and my wiring doesn't match istans diagram. My wiring from the car goes as follows:

Fan connector 1:
1. Blue 2. light green

3. Yellow 4. Black

Fan connector 2:

1: Blue/white 2. Red

3. Yellow/Red 4. Black

Could anyone please help me match these to istans diagram? I looked in the service manual and don't see any wiring info and I don't have a multimeter on hand!!!

bump back from the dead.

did anyone get this wiring idea to work without the use of an aftermarket fan controller?

this is usefull, i think someone should make a multiple speed fan for the 350z, so its pretty much plug and play

So i did some research. Will be installing a Mizu radiator which provides 2 wire fans. The FSM has some typos in it. Verified with 2006 manual vs 2003.

pins on fan
1 low +
2 high +
3 gnd
4 switched gnd

The OEM fans internally set the speed. Pins 1 and 2 both receive +12v from the same 40A fuse. What I am unsure of is if both pins are hot at the same time or if they are discreet. They are not wired for interlocked operation.

The fans could be wired in parallel 12v to achieve high speed and series 12v to achieve low speed. the wiring should be rated for the fuse size, so minimum 40A.

Running high speed all the time doesnt sound too bad considering i have the Radiator, ac condenser, intercooler, and oil cooler all stacked.

Just wondering why there is a switched ground and a non switched. There are some failsafes built in so that the fans run if the ecu is unplugged i believe. Going to research the FSM some more.

I am not certain about your setup, but my aftermarket dif controller uses a switched ground to pulse width modulate the fan speed.

That shouldn't be the case here. With nissan using what looks like electromechanical relays ( their drawings show dry contacts, coils and not transitors) you would not want to do PWM on a motor. The contacts would wear out in no time and lots of noise.
