Thumbs up Oversized Oil Filters

Just thought I'd throw this out there. I know the standard size oil filter is really small, and many use the PH7317 as a slightly larger filter. I figured I'd mention another that is drastically larger and still fits. The purolator L20073.

See attached photo comparisons:

Wix Filter Comparisons:
Stock - http://www.wixfilters.com/filterlook...asp?Part=51365
PH7317 - http://www.wixfilters.com/filterlook...asp?Part=51356
Purolator L20073 - http://www.wixfilters.com/filterlook...asp?Part=51347

The purolator does have a larger gasket mounting diameter, however the filter mounting base on the stock oil cooler is large enough (barely) for the filter to fit. I've put about 20 miles on it so far with no leaks, and saw 120 psi at the oil pressure gauge (With no leaks).

I don't believe there is very many other brands that this cross-references to, I know there is not a pure-one version of this filter. I got several of these from Pep Boys.

Daamn... thats a big *** filter.

I don't see the point though... the standard sized filter should be big enough, but I can see getting an ever-so-slightly bigger filter put on for that extra security... but if you're gonna go so far as to stick a gigantic filter on for an even greater security, you ought to just get a by-pass filter installed (like that Amsoil one)

Bigger filter is not always better. Renowned tuners like Spoon use a band around their oil filter to keep it from expanding. The bigger the oil filter, the easier it is to expand. If you really want the protection, a bigger oil pan would be best. More oil=more ability to soak engine heat=better lasting performance.

I've been using the WIX filter from an 98 Accord V6 for a while - bigger than stock, but does not interfere with anything, and it's worked out just fine. I happened to stumble across one here at the shop a while back, noticed it was bigger than stock but still fit nicely, and it's what I've been using since.

Canton oil filters offer two spin on types..long and short. They are great
as they are 8 micron...yes 8 and the small ones flow 15 gallons of hot oil
per minute and the large ones flow 45 gallons per minute. They have a
replaceable cartridge (filter) for like $17.00 and are of the highest quality.
8 micron will catch just about anything.
