Default Drive shaft

Hey guys, quick question. I just had the clutch/flywheel replaced in my car. After I got home and was looking at the work order I noticed it was marked, "needs driveshaft rebuilt." Anyone clue me into what this means? What am I looking at in terms of work time, cost of parts, etc?

How many miles on your car, is it under warranty, who replaced the clutch & flywheel??? Whoever put the note there should be able to explain!!! Maybe you just need a new U joint, or the spline on the front of the drive shaft is worn or stripped out and is slipping. Hopefully you car is under warranty and Nissan will replace under warranty.

Yea I am going to ask the shop what the deal is. It was just a local garage that did the job. The guy wasnt very friendly after I insisted on bringing in a flywheel I got on my own. Anyway, I have an 03 with 53K. I bought it used a year ago with 5K less. No warranty on the car that I know of.

Mine has a few knicks on it due to speed bumps my Z is lowered, the integrity of the driveshaft is not in any way compromised. The Z driveshafts are CF reinforced, and maybe the local shop is not used to seeing this type of material bonded to the driveshaft. Or maybe the wants to bend you over for bringing in your own parts.....either way I am now curious

So I went into the shop today to ask why someone had noted on the work order that the drive shaft needed rebuilt. He was like, oh ya I forgot to mention that. He said that the Ujoints were stiff and were going to cause premature wear so eventually they will fail, not right away but in time. He said either I need a whole new drive shaft or he'll send it away and have it rebuilt. Man o man. Could it be that my car is still under the 60,000 mile warranty and I just dont know it? I'm not the original owner but I thought the powertrain warranty transfered owners. Any thoughts on my situation? Like how expensive this is going to be?

Im under a Z almost every day and today I glanced up to see how the shaft was set up....thinking of this Thread. The front is using a Universal and I suspect the rear is also. Nothing odd about them, but the shaft may have to be rebalanced if UJ is replaced. I have yet to drop a shaft in a 60,000 mile Z so I cant say as to the longevity of the joints

I've been looking around and have found a drive shaft off an 03 that was smashed down the right side with 15,000 miles on it for $165. I'm thinking this is well worth it. did you find anything out Mr Eazzzzy?

I chked on specs last night. There are run-out tolerances of 1.5 mm. Certain precautions on removal and installation, none that I had practiced, but Im careful and that was what was covered-----Dont Nick,Cut or Scratch...Common sense. Also proper alignment of joints to flanges whick should always be noted on all Drive Shafts. This is all I can offer without the car parked here.

Hate to use the cliche, But...Second Opinion is in order. I can say this, A new one is between 500-600.00

I thought the u joints were suPPosed to be kinda stiff.....I think you should be fine. You are probably just experiencing NORMAL wear & tear, I would keep on driving, after all the mechanics who installed your pressure plate & clutch are kinda fishing for $$$$ from you. What are others on this forum suGGesting????

Its been 5 years since 02 though.

I mean its still 07 so there is a possibility that you can still get it warrantied, but its 5yr/60k.... He probably purchased his 03 in 2002. If he purchased it in 03, then you can probably still get your warranty

Yea, whats the worst that can happen? Shaft joints burst, pulvulting the car into oncoming traffic? ha. I think mythbusters already solved that one. Anyway, seriously though, what is the worst that can happen? Anyone know what kind of job it is to change out a drive shaft? Not to bring up another tv show again, but I saw on Pinks one time a team change out a mustang drive shaft in 7 minutes or something.

I bet the shop is just trying to suggest work and make some mula off me. little do they know I'm not about to go their route and have them have it rebuilt = probably 600-700 bucks. Instead I'll just find one off a wrecked Z for under 200. Just need to find out how much it cost in labor. I think for now I'll just drive on it. If its going to fail, it will probably happen when I launch from a light or something and wont cause any major damage, I hope, but dont know for certain either way.

I saw it happen once. I was standing in a parking lot talking to two of my friends when some kid and his girlfriend pulled up in a Jeep Cherokee and jokingly said, "Wanna race?" He floored it as he shifted into drive and the universal joint shattered. We couldn't help but laugh as we watched his driveshaft bouncing and sparking on the ground, ocassionally bouncing up and beating up the underside of his car. He seemed pretty embarresed and wouldn't quit gassing it, hoping the car would move. When he got out, he kept saying, "What am I going to tell my Dad?"
