Engine Break In
Ok with my new Engine coming soon (Oil Consumption replacement) Im wondering on breakin FACTS.
Theres so much BS around the topic and a google will give you 1000 different opinions. What im looking for is the opinions of the engine builders/tuners on this site since you deal with VQ's daily.
Specifically Forged, GTM etc etc.. The big boys with good reputations. What is the recommended process? Or the one you follow?
Cheers

I always tell people to ask their engine builder in regards to break-in procedure. Things like ring selection, bore finish, and other factors all have an effect on how you break in an engine.
I am sure you wont have an issue...best of luck.

This is a post from an earlier thread after I had my engine replaced, hope it helps:
ZPHILE stated: " work & load the car for the first 200 or so miles but below the 4K rev limit of course. Also, the first 20mi being so crucial, the techs put that in on your car before you get it so that they know it runs right - oh well!"
This is exactly how I broke in mine, avoiding exceeding 4000 RPMs. Wish I knew how many miles the mechanic put on it and how he drove it. Oh well, I still think I got it early enough (next day, only driven home night before by tech) to make a difference on the break in. Changed out the oil at 200 miles, right at 1000 now and it is almost at the "H" line. If this keeps up may have a winner. I will repost consumption results at 2000 miles.

Personally i barely trust them to install the engine yet alone engine break in. Last guy i spoke to said there was no such thing as break in with new engines.. That says enough right there too me..

When all thats already broken in and its just the engine I'd think the process would be a little different.

there is no best way, that is what everyone who has tried to answer you so far is telling you
just go by the factory service manual/owners manual...can never go wrong that way

IMO: #1 most important thing is don't put heavy loads on the engine until it's fully warmed up.
When the engine is new... let it warm up longer before you start driving. Then follow the factory instructions, 4k rpm, no full throttle, and vary the RPMs like you got a bad itch

The manuel is only a suggestion if that, and is set up for the common idiot. Take what you want from it , but its not the bible ( how many people follow that anyhow)

conversely, trying to mimic some break in procedure that you read on the internet, written by people of varying levels of expertise (oftein meaning no expertise at all) is akin to writing thesis paper with wikipedia as your main source.

Just thought that I would add that I used to work at the Nissan plant in Smyrna, Tn and from watching some of the people there, there is a high likelyhood that if your Z passed through it was probably run fairly hard early in it's life. Too many people there had the "it's not my car" mentallity...back when the Altima SE-R was about to be released they were drag racing them in the outer parking lots.

So far I have been good with my break in period. But today after 940 miles
I said to myself damm I have to at least see what this thing good do and especially with the upgrades I have. And All I have to say is the HR motor is a beast it I took it to 7000rpm and it sounded unbelivable. It was pulling so hard I had to keep my eyes on the road but on 3rd gear I was at 100mph with still more leg room on that gear. It pulls like a turbo. Now I take it easy for the next 260 miles
