who thinks the trany is alittle "nochy"
how many miles do you have?
It gets much smoother in time......night and day difference b/w 5k miles and 10-12k miles.
My observations anyways.....give a little time, if you haven't ....if so you can always swap to a better fluid.....it makes a huge difference.

I totally agree with that last post. Mine loosened up and I have about 6k miles now. I kinda liked it real notchy though.. the sign of a good trans when it has those real nice positive shift engagements
wow, I've only got 600mi and I do notice the gates are real notchy. I do believe that it will get smoother with miles though. The Z seems to need a lot of "breaking in". For instance, the engine was really rough and raspy, like a tractor engine, but once I hit 400mi it has gotten much much smoother.
For those that have Dweeb's short shifter, does that make the shifts any smoother?

I have almost 16K miles on mine, and it is still notchy. I switched to Redline MT-90 at about 4K, but it didn't make much of a difference. I like a positive engagment, but notchy? It really bugs me...
I wouldn't count on a short-shifter making it smoother. If anything, it will make it even notchier. I believe that all the rubber parts are removed, giving you a more direct linkage to the tranny. I'd never do that to my car....

"Clunky" is more descriptive IMO. I don't mind the notchiness so much as the metal-hitting-metal sound it makes when it engages. Kinda embarrassing, since it's loud enough that you actually can hear it from outside the car. And there is telltale signs of grinding - 2nd and 5th being the worst. Tranny is definitely the lowest point of the car. I think Niissan should have paid more attention to this.
4600 miles and switching to 50/50 Redline hasn't made any difference. (except mileage has improved by about 1mpg). I sure miss the smooth shifts in my '79 280ZX, but that was a long time ago in a gala...
