Jimster: Motul?- that's a good but interesting choice. You must have a specialty shop stocking that. Not too readily available on the east coast.

y2k: most use full synthetic Redline, Amsoil or Mobil 1. No reason not to use full syn, once you're broken in.

How often should you change Mobil 1 if you do mostly highway driving?

Every 3K or 10K or somewhere in between?

Indeed...stocked by the barrel but sold in 2 and 4 liter cans. My biz associate's shop carries it.

MatthewZ- you should certainly get 10k highway miles out of it. I would just pay attention to color & smell when you check it and change before 10k if it seems desirable.

Good synthetic oil, like Mobil 1, can easily withstand extened use. The problem with exteded drain intervals is that the oil gets dirty. The weakest link in most automobile lubrication systems is the filter - and the Nissan factory filters are about as bad as oil filters get (I took both OEM filters apart -- very cheap paper filters). Most engine wear is caused by relatively small particles about 10 microns in size -- too small for most paper filters to capture. This is why the newer synthetic media filters are much better -- many are 90+% efficient in the 10-20 micron range. I use the Mobil 1 M1-110 high efficiency filter, which is exactly the same size as the larger of the two OEM filters.
Even so, I change my oil every 3K miles... i'm **** like that.
Some day, I imagine that automobile makers will embrace the use of high efficiency bypass filters, which are standard equiptment on virtually all commercial trucks. This second filter will remove particles down to 1 micron in size. The use of a bypass filter is one major reason that truck engines regularly run 1 Million miles between overhauls.
