Default NISMO R-Tune FlyWheel

My tranny is on order cause it is beng replaced. I was wondering what you guys thought about throwing in the NISMO flywheel and ACT clutch. Anyone have any other information on these two? Or any other suggestions?

Thanks,
Rich

The NISMO Flywheel is 21.8lbs.

The Jim Wolf is 14lbs. The JUN is 14lbs. Stillen is ~13lbs. All are cheaper than the NISMO.

Do the math.

How much does the stock flywheel weigh then? I can get you the NISMO unit for 505 dollars.

I flew back to KC from LA today, just before I went to the airport, I realized JeffH at Perf. Nissan was just down the road. Well, I stopped in and picked up the Nismo flywheel since my tranny replacement is now set in stone for Monday. Then I get the email from SGP saying the JUN flywheel I ordered shipped out next day today and will be here tomorrow so I'll have the JUN and the NISMO.

I assume the JUN will be better since its obviously lighter. Is there ANY advantage with performance or durability with the NISMO over the JUN???

I was told the NISMO is 27% lighter than the stock flywheel which I thought was 27 lbs

I'll probably have a flywheel for sale in a couple days if anyone is hungry for one now.

The stock flywheel is ~27 lbs. I've actually seen specs ranging from 23 to 30 lbs but I weighed my stock one and it was ~27lbs. NISMO is 21.8lbs.

Default Flywheel

The weight is one thing, but WHERE the weight is more of a factor.

Lighter near the outside has more of an effect.

The OEM flywheel is a "dual mass" flywheel where the NISMO is a solid flywheel.

The Nismo flywheel appears to have a lot more to it with parts bolted together and the notched portion of the flywheel is welded to the faceplate of the flywheel.

The JUN flywheel is ONE solid piece of metal.

I would assume that the JUN is a better build by looking.

I suppose its a roll of the dice for me. I think I'll go for the JUN on the Monday morning install.

Well thanks for the input guys. I went down there this morning and spent some mucho dinero. Fly, CAI, Headers, Exhaust, camshafts, sways, suspension, and the rims still deciding on tires. I'm not going to even put the total...lol I am disgusted at myself.

This means My amuse r1 will be for sale soon as well as the top secret Y. anyone interested let me know both in good condition about 4K miles.

thanks again

I haven't seen any anywhere, not even on Nismo's own site. I expect it's either a cone intake inside the stock airbox, or it's similar to AEM and Injen's setup.

Actually guys,
The OE flywheel is about 29 lbs, the Nismo unit is 21.6lbs.

We could have gone lighter, but opted against it for a few reasons. The main reason the OE flywheel is a dual mass is that is there is considerably less noise and vibration and it makes the car much easier to launch. (Read, all types of drivers need to e able to drive the Z and enjoy it). Try getting a lighter (<21lbs) flywheel and pull from low RPM in 2nd, 3rd or 4th gear. Sounds like the tranny is gonna grenade. Obviously not good for the tranny, much more load gets distributed to the tranny this way. The Nismo flywheel tries to balance high performance (less weight) with driveability, streetability (ease of launching) and reliability (easy on the tranny).

Not to mention if you go too light on the flywheel, you decrease your engine braking capability when downshifting for a corner.

Just for reference, the Nismo flywheel, clutch disc & cover is the best all around combination I have ever driven on a Z. Makes the engine feel like a revy, small displacement V6.

Hope this helps guys.

Exactly!!! People always mistakenly assume that lighter is better. Just like underdrive pullies, a too lightweight flywheel will not do a proper job af damping vibration. The undamped vibration will be transmitted directly into the tranny. Nissan will then have an easy out for no longer fixing any further tranny issues you may have.

The Nismo Flywheel is an R Tune piece if I am not mistake. It won't be warranteed itself by Nissan, but Nissan would have a harder time not giving you warranty service if it was a part built by them. I'll stick with Nismo on this one.

Yeah, you guys are probably right.

I may go with the Nismo instead.

Anyone want a JUN flywheel? You can't get one anywhere they are way backordered from what I've been told.

The first thing going on is the CAI cause it was already on the way when I ordered it. So that is cool. I will make a new post for the pics of the parts maybe post some in here. It is supposed to be in on wenesday. And I will snap some pics of the tranny and fly wheel. also when they work on that. The exhaust and headers will be a 2 week wait...

i AGREE WITH Lighter is not always better. I am sure there is a reason NISMO did what they did.
