Default Quick question: starting in 2nd bad?

I was wondering if it was in anyway cumbersome on the transmission to start the out in 2nd as opposed to first from a dead stop... I've always just thrown it into 2nd unless I was at a total and complete dead stop; I've recently gotten into the habit of starting in 2nd (mostly to avoid wheel spin on residual sand from snow/ice removal in my area.)... It almost seems easier, I mean first gear is better for a hard launch but that is seldom something I do in everyday driving.

I don't think it's that bad. I've done it on previous cars with no issues. I just think of it like a bike; if you start in a higher gear, you are going to have to work harder to get moving. I would imagine that it is not as easy on the motor as starting in first, but I can't see any harm coming from it. I wouldn't make it an every-time-you-start kind of thing, though.

Haven't seen many Iowans around - where are you from?

If you get a bit of clutch slip it will wear faster, yeah... Everything else should be fine.

Don't you have traction control? Use it when your just driving normally in those conditions.
