Default Cry 02 - Does it actually do something?

I've been reading a few magazines lately and always see this Cry O2 product being advertised.

Here is what it says exactly in their advertisement.

"The Cry02 System super cools the intake air and fuel charge by utilizing the cryogenic properties of CO2. The system consists of Tank/Install Kt, Cryogenic Air Intake, Cryogenic Fuel Bar, and Intercooler sprayer."

It won best new product at Sema 2002. Anyone know about it? Does it do anything?

Some manufacturers are considering using CO2 as a replacement for Freon in new air conditioners. It is a closed loop system and as the CO2 is released it cools, thus drawing off heat. Could be some merit to what you've got there.

Would this product actually increase performance? I have no doubt it'll keep the engine cooler and put less strain on the engine, but as far as performance, how much would cooler air really help hp/tq wise?

I get to answer first! Let's see, cooler air is more dense (and thus contains more oxygen per unit volume of air). Cooler air going into an intake means the engine can utilize more oxygen for combustion. This usually translates into a very minor increase of a few horse power. Same reasons you bought your Injen CAI.

Looks to perform the same function as an intercooler, but uses a different mechanism. The fact that it has to be recharged would annoy me, personally. Plus, CO2 is greenhouse gas... not that anyone around here really cares, though.

well, from the looks of it, the system basically expels compressed CO2, which lowers the temperature of the gas. Once you run out of compressed CO2, the system stops working.... you need a recharge. I'm pretty sure there is no compressor that will recapture and recompress the CO2 to be recycled...

By the way, that's exactly the proposed mechanism behind the auto manufdactureres consideration of a CO2 system to replace freon. It'll be a recyclable system, no production of new gasses.

Hello Andrew,
There is a push button to spray it, ever so often, or a full wide open throttle switch. You can get about 2 1/2-3 minutes out of the tank and can fill it up for a $1 a pound.

interesting..i know I can get refill's at my welders...I think i'm going to go over to Gotelli's and check out the system,as they carry them,supposedly. Looks like at leats a fun 'afternoon mod' and it'll at least look cool.

what the hell.

yeah that's what I was thinking. I would have to have a swtich inside, not a wide open one. I would blow through a bottle in 2 minutes. Depending on the price, I think it woud be a pretty cool mod. You said you can fill up at your welders? How much do you think it would cost to re-fill a bottle that size?

5 bucks maybe 10. co2 is cheap. you could actually buy a big bottle of it for probably 200 bucks keep it in the garage,do your own refills. it's not an explosive substance.

seems like a lot of mony for the minimal gains you'd get. maybe it's just me, but you've got to at least buy the installation kit and the intake charge cooler. On ebay that's a minimum for $250 for a little bit cooler intake charge. Doesn't seem worth it for the minimal gains you'd get. It's a 5 lb bottle at $1 lb to recharge. If it could somehow recirculate when you weren't using it then great, otherwise seems like a waste of money. This is just my opinion though.

What are we talking maybe 10-15 HP for 2 minutes....

Old thread but I had to bring this back. From what I understand CryO2 cools the intake charge significantly. It may not sound like that would make much of a difference but to me I notice a big difference in my car during the winter as compared to the hot summer weather. I think this would definitely be worth it.
