Default Auto Tranny Shift Shift Problem

Hey guys, I have an 06' automatic Z with the manual mode. The other day I was driving and decided to take off pretty fast, when the needle on the tach reached redline, it would not shift (keep in mind, it was in D mode not the manual mode). I slowed down and the RPM slowly decreased but it would never shift to a higher gear. I even tried putting it into manual mode to shift it myself, and still nothing. I eventually turned the car off and the problem was fixed when I turned it back on.

I did some research on here and found a couple similar problems but nothing exact. I was just curious if this could be caused be any particular reason, should I get it checked, or do you think it was just a fluke? Thanks for the info. in advance guys.

Mine has done that a couple times too, seems to only happened when I had a little drift going, but I only do that in the manual mode so it wont shift on me in the middle of the slide. Were you going in a straight line?

lionheart the auto z is way more reliable than the 6speed so holla back when your on your 2nd or 3rd transmission when the auto is still running strong, holla lol.

My Auto has never done that. Only 33K on it, but still feels decently strong.

I've heard that you can't power brake a 350Z 5AT past 3000rpms or it will shut down on you, maybe you when past this limit with wheel skiding making the computer in the 5AT think you were power braking and way past its limit.

Anyway like going to a Doctor saying it hurts when I do this, the Doctors reply is don't do that.

The 5sp ATs I've driven I've never had that happen and I've burned rubber all over the place in them.

Hmmm, that is interesting. Well, like I said it only happened once so hopefully that will be it. Thanks for the info guys. I did not know you weren't supposed to torque rev it passed 3000 RPMs. I'll keep that in mind ha for future references.

OP- I have a few questions for you. I might know the issue here.

1. Is your car convertible?
2. Did you hear the engine continue to rev higher or were you just judging by the needle position on the tach?
3. Did your car sit in the sun for a little bit before this occurred?

I might be way off track, which is why I asked him the questions first. I have an auto and there have been a few times that I didn't think it shifted when it should have. Upon closer inspection, it did shift, but the needle was stuck in place. This happens when the sun heats the black plastic behind the gauge (convertibles being more susceptible) and when that plastic expands, the friction holds the needle in place for a little bit.

Once again, I might be way off, but this sounds like what I experience once in a while myself.

I've had this happen before in manual mode. Got near the redline and tried to shift, but nothing happened. I pushed it again before it hit the redline... still nothing. I had to let off the gas till around 3k before it would shift up. Weird. (I know mine didn't shift too because the digital tach still displayed 1.) Lesson learned: Shift earlier in 1st gear. Haven't had the problem since.

Now we are talking standing on the brakes and reveving the engine building rpms and burning rubber. I've had them reveved almost up to redline going up to to 135mph quickly (I know the car will do more but I'm a chicken) and shifting so only when you power brake or anything like that does the 5spd AT safety measure occur.

Just to be safe, I would check tranny fluid as per the FSM or have the dealer do it. You need to let the car warm up and use a lint free cloth (whatever that is).
