Lightbulb Performance parts and your warranty: know your rights

Ok, after reading many posts there seems to be some question about aftermarket parts and warranties. The last person you want to listen to about what parts will void your warranty is your dealer. They are out to make money. This includes trying to get out of warranty work if they can. thanks to the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act your dealer has to prove that the part you put on your car is the cause of problem that you want covered by your warranty.

The SEMA website has some very usefull info on this subject HERE.

The truth is most bolt on parts won't harm your car at all. Things like headers, CAIs' and catbacks are just freeing up power. The worst thing that will happen to your car after adding stuff like that is you will drive it like an a-hole. Thats never good for your car.

Some of us dealers are on your side. We enjoy modifying cars and and it's these customers that make our jobs fun. As several on this Forum know my door is always open to them and we give better treatment to our 350Z and SE-R/SpecV customers than the others.

I wish you guys were over here in VA. My local dealer scratched up the paint behind my front license plate bracket. I asked them if they'd fix it because it was their fault, and I wanted to move my plate down and use a different bracket. First they said no, that's not a warranty problem, too bad. On top of that, they were talking about not covering any engine related problems just because I was thinking about moving the plate. Geez....

Yeah my dealer is installing my Borla headers and exhaust for me.

My sales guy was even talking about putting in a Nismo chip for me if they ever come out with one. He indicated they've done some Nismo turbos for some people with other Nissans (not 350Z's obviously, though he was like "if they ever come in for your Z I'll let you know!") as well.

jeffh355,

What does your dealership think about superchargers??? I'm going to be installing a supercharger soon and am actually going to be moving to your area next April.

I never asked.

I suspect they'd install it for me, but I doubt that they'd give me any special consideration for warranty coverage if the supercharger actually caused engine damage.

When they did mention doing mods he always mentioned Nismo, so I think they give Nismo an extra nod because they're linked with Nissan.

But when I called and asked if I could have my Borla exhaust and headers drop-shipped to them and installed they said "no problem."

We will work with you on any mod (within reason). Keep in mind if you blow out the bottom end I very much doubt anyone any where will warranty it. But other unrelated problems will be a piece of cake.

I think he means the bottom end of your engine, as in pistons, connecting rods, etc.

That kind of goes without saying. With the dealership I've got now, they seem like the type of dealership who would try to blame everything on mods.

I'm sure there are, I would honestly think that there are more "good" dealers than bad but then my view might be skewed. Just call around to your local dealers and talk to the service managers. Give them the "what if" stuff and see if you like their answers. Or move to the L.A. area and i'll take care of ya'

I wonder if this could also go along with the domestic cars/trucks? I know that some of the deisel guys are chipping their trucks and getting a ton of hp and torque. One guy I know of "melted" the head on his duramax beucause his chip allowed his motor to get too hot. He pulled his chip out and didn't tell them about it. He got a new had for $0.00 dollars.

I'm thinking I have a dealer who is not "mod friendly"... I went in to get the TSB for the windows and the lady started yapping about how my windows were tinted so it may not be covered. They did it for free but it got me worried about everything else. They will probably void my warranty if they find out I put Zaino on the paint!

I just had a comment about the Roseville Future Nissan in California Sacramento area...I just got my 350z (YEEAAAA) and i originally wanted to buy from them but they were the biggest jerks i have ever met in my life. I ended up getting a used one (basically brand new) from Roseville Autowest Mazda. I think this was partially on behalf that i am only 18 years old .

Also, BTW, Anyone looking for a 350z in my area, the roseville place has a redline red base model with a sweet body kit, custom 18's, custom chrome grill, custom aftermarket spoiler, and shaved emblems. This thing is awesome, they were trying to sell it for $42k, i had them at $30k but they wouldn't give me enough for my trade. Just a little heads up!

Yea i know what u mean about treating you different b/c your young. ONly i'm 22!! Classic cars nissan in hainsport treated me horrible. I went in there to see what i could get on a trade in on my 96 328 bmw(perfect condition) and they told me 4-5 grand. YEaaaaaaaaaaaa right then they were acting like the 350z is some exotic that i would never be able to afford. I so would love to go back to them and show that i sold my bmw for 14,500 and i'm not going to thier dealership to order my 350 (this spring) . ON the other hand cherry hill nissan was very nice and still emails me about specials and what not even though i told them i wouldnt' be ordering till may(want to finish up my last year of school before getting a new car)
